Besides the m/c show.. nearby a flea and farmers market. Also the SS Aribia museum. A excellent step back into time and discover how the boat was recovered from deep underground in a farm field and all it's contents on display.
My wife and I, along with another couple, have it on the calendar.. I hope to take my Cb450P and my buddy plans on one of his early Cb750's.

Re: CX500 / Trident Police Trike Rebuild
The windshield is installed and the trike is done (sort of). It passed the the state safety inspection and is licensed.
The only downside is that during the 30 miles of riding today it had a really good chance to get up to full operating temperature and dropped one cylinder. I suspect either an ignition coil or a connector but it could be deeper than that. There are several hours of troubleshooting ahead this weekend. The headshake that I detected while riding in my garage during the past few week seems to be limited to speeds below 20 MPH. Above that the trike is very smooth. I'll dig into this as well.

Re: CX500 / Trident Police Trike Rebuild
This bike has the TI units (it's an '82) and the test procedures I have indicate they seem to be working but spark is weak to non-existent. It's looking like the ignition coils failed - this 30 mile ride was the first time the bike really got up to its "normal" operating temperature. The secondary on one coil measures open and the secondary on the other measures several Meg ohms. When I first got the engine running several months ago, one of the ignition coils was shot (the bike had been stored outside for about 10 years) and I picked up a used replacement on eBay. There are no new CX500 ignition coils to be had, failing crossing paths with someone who has NOS coils stashed away, so I have ordered a several pairs of generic replacements to try out.salukispeed wrote:Start with the basics like plug or fuel . Good to hear that it is an 82 and has TI units. Have you looked at the CX500 forum. Lots of great info and pretty good group of people with parts or sources.. I got some good pieces for My GL500 from some there. I gentleman named Murrayf that has good contacts and information.

Re: CX500 / Trident Police Trike Rebuild
I am on the CX500 forum and I have corresponded with Murrayf. You're right about there being a lot of good info there. The recommendations I received over the winter when I discovered the bad coil prior to initial startup were either 1) hopefully find good used coils, and 2) some people were using generic coils. I am not going to screw around with anymore used coils so I am pursuing trying out various generic coils. I expect a couple of pairs of generic coils to arrive in about a week.salukispeed wrote:Good to hear that it is an 82 and has TI units. Have you looked at the CX500 forum. Re: CX500 / Trident Police Trike Rebuild
Good new and bad news.
I replaced the coils (I was getting a weak yellow spark and the secondaries measured very high resistance, even when cold) with these coils from eBay. They measure ~2.5 ohms on the primary (a bit lower than the original coils) and ~11K ohms on the secondary. The result was a strong blue spark again. It was a trivial matter to mount them on the original coil brackets.
I have put some more mileage on the trike and continued to notice very poor performance when the engine was a full operating temperature after riding a while. Further troubleshooting with the ignition document at:
http://www.genebitsystems.com/david/Mot ... oblems.htm
revealed that the ignition pickup coils are failing. When I initially got the engine running last winter, the pickup coils measured ~540 ohms each and life was good. Now they measure slightly over 1-Meg when hot.
Looks like I'm going to be pulling the engine to replace the pickup coils. As long as I'm in there I will thoroughly examine the stator and water pump. I don't want to do this more than once if I can avoid it.
The motorcycle gods have smiled down on me and I scored an NOS ignition pickup coil assembly on eBay from a bike guy in Spain for 65 Euros plus 12 Euros shipping.

Re: CX500 / Trident Police Trike Rebuild
your project sure is coming along nicely. Looks great. Sorry to hear it continues to mess with you. I believe the water pump is just a seal replacement and is available from Yamaha for less than 1/2 what honda wants. Check again with the CX500 group. I found the Yamaha one on Ebay . Some have seen wear on the impeller splines from being loose but most are good. since the rear cover will be off for the stator look closely at the timing chain and slippers and tensoner . they are a bit short lived on these bikes. Your already in it.

Re: CX500 / Trident Police Trike Rebuild
I had originally sourced a set of NOS ignition pickup coils on eBay from a bike shop in Spain. After 6 weeks of waiting they still had not shown up. The bike shop sent me the tracking number and the Spanish postal service on-line status acknowledged receipt of the package but nothing after that. I contacted eBay and they refunded the entire purchase price.
The other day I ordered the full electronic ignition from Rae San in Australia. It comes highly recommended by folks on the CX500 forum. It's an interesting product and it eliminates the need for the pair of igniter modules as well. Just use the new electronic ignition with the coils. I'll put new ignition coils in just to be on the safe side.
http://www.rae-san.com/
I just received an envelope from the US Postal Service that solves the mystery of the missing NOS ignition pickup coils. It seems that the package made it to Atlanta but either disintegrated in handling or was looted. Their note states "An empty wrapper with your address was found in the mail and it is believed to have been separated from a parcel during handling." They enclosed the mailing label and the customs declaration.
As soon as the Rae San ignition stuff arrives, I will pull the engine (not looking forward to that) and replacing the stator and water pump while I'm in there. I only want to pull the engine once.

The Rae-San electronic ignition arrived while I was at the BTW National Trike-In in Dodge City (great rally, by the way). I have a couple of piddly items to get out of the way before I can get around to pulling the engine. I estimate sometime in August before I can get to it.
The cylindrical metal piece in the photos is a replacement for the mechanical timing advancer assembly. It contains a magnet that triggers the Hall Effect devices in the electronic ignition. Timing advance is handled electronically by this ignition. The white plugs in the photos plug into the stock wiring harness in place of the original igniter modules. The Rae-San ignition directly drives the high-voltage spark coils.
