Silverwing question

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

Silverwing question

#1

Post by Big brother »

I'm new here,if I make mistakes...... I was given a 1983 Honda silver wing gl650 Interstate that was bought in Ok. And rode to Ms. Then set up approx seven years. I'm willing to do the work I need to get it on the road. Being retired, I have the time. However, I need direction. I am not a mechanic, but good with my hands, and willing. I replaced the battery, it turned the motor over, but no spark at plugs. Any help would be appreciated.

I have split this off as a new thread so it does not get lost. I put it on the tech forum even though it is for a GL650, so it will get more views

btw welcome to NGW, and you might also stop by the intro forum and introduce yourself

if I recall, the cx500s had some problems with the pulse generators, but mine ran poorly, but wuld run. I replaced something in the back of the engine, but that was 20 years ago. I would start with looking at all the connections first.

Welcome from the wingdom. and Chicago The ignition on those has been very reliable unlike the early 500's so here goes with the simple/dumb question. Please no offence, Is the kill switch on? and was the bike stores outside where the ign and kill switches could be corroded. Rodent damage?? There is another very good cx/gl site that some here belong to http://cx500forum.com/ that is a good source of info. I have the smaller brother to yours 82 GL500I

If it has been sitting up that long the carbs and gas tank will need to be gone through.
Just look inside the gas tank and see how much rust is in there.
If it has been run with a rusty gas tank probably has crap in everything.
If it's not getting fuel it won't fire and you may want to check the spark plugs.

You can also check and see how much spark you are getting at the spark plug.

On the CX/GL500 web site there is a link to just about everything you ever wanted to know about the Silverwings. I'm a member of that site also. You can download the FSM from the Wikilink and there are tons of nice folks to point you in the right direction

I am new to this forum....
But wanted to find out something about the GL650 silverwing which l had just bought.l Just noticed when turned the key to on that the head and tail light come on. cannot find a switch to turn off which is normally on the throttle side of handlebar. The otherside has indicators and high/low beam.I find it very strange.Tried to get info on this eg haynes manual, but to no avail.Just that the lights will come on even during day time in bright sunshine.
Has anyone come across this same problem?

Use to have a honda superdream 400n 30years ago but it had a on/off switch for the lights on the engine kill control.

head light on while riding is the law in most states, and Honda only followed the rules for the U.S. bikes
