1982 Cx500 Police
Good Day
the back story.... visited the swap meet in Woodstock, Ill last spring. A 6hr drive. Hadn't been there in years and wasn't look'n for anything in particular but kept a eye out for early Xs650 and Cb450 goodies. I got a small blue police light for a project back home and another dealer ask'd if I want'd a police trike. I told her I'm not a Harley guy... " but, it's a Honda "... Oh ! The following weekend " Road Trip "... and I owned a very rough ex Chicago PD trike and a running 79' parts bike (no paper).
The bike had sat for years and the throttle wouldn't open and because it was a full time service unit it suffered from Midwest winters and road condition. I pull'd the engine and 99% of the bolts snap'd. I found a running 82' on crudlist. It became the donor. The old unit has a internal reverse...cable operated... the transmission was swapped... 4 forward... one reverse.... the trike frame was media blasted, serviced and painted...as pre the original style. the rear of the frame was cut off and a third of the seat.. this was need'd to allow clearance for the ice cream box... also the 3rd shock was installed.... the rear bumper had about 5 pounds of steel shot inside.. weight.. ballast...harmonic issues..?.. we poured it into the new bumper and add'd support braces to the frame.
Next... once Ma Nature cooperates.... off to Midas.. dual pipes out the back with chrome tips.. then visit the brake warehouse.. have a braided line made from the floor board mounted master cylinder to the red valve behind the right side cover... brake line lock valve for the rear brakes... allows rider to dismount and leave the bike running. Once I have rear brakes... and Ma Nature cooperates... a test ride ! If things work out.. then the box gets repaired and paint and the tin bits bet painted.. not Chicago PD blue and white.. but the standard " ChiP's" style. My painter already did the helmet and I did a design and had it applied... I'll use the same design on the bike and the box.

Re: 1982 Cx500P
later we discovered the coil wires to the main harness when correctly connected did wonders .. but now it seems to be fuel starved. Suspect the vacuum petcock.. we used a satellite fuel tank and the bike pop'd straight away.
Pull'd in the clutch and one up.. 2nd gear.. released clutch, the rear wheel spun.. sweet... back to neutral... stop'd the drums with the now work'n rear brakes... pull'd in cutch.. pull'd reverse lever under the throttle... step'd shift lever down one... release clutch lever.." Houston... we have reverse ".
it will be 5-6 weeks before anything more is done.. the project is at my buddies garage and he's Florida snowbird bound.

....did the video I attach'd to the previous post work... ?
I use to work at a exhaust shop and knock'd the " twice pipes " out... figured the chrome tips should help it go faster.

Re: 1982 Cx500P
The fellow in the first photo.. sitting.. is a professional welder and has help'd pull my kister.. and others.. out of the fire many many times. He can weld paper.
He has tools of his trade at his garage and has spent several nights help'n work on my project. His project is the truck... from his family farm in SW Minnesota...sat for years.... drag'd it to his home.. north metro Minneapolis... cut 4 feet out of the rear frame.. add'd a Ford Explore rear send... S-10 5 speed tranny and a rebuilt flathead Ford V8... much work is still need'd... we kid him about have'n it ready for " Back to the 50"s " event at the state fairgrounds in June... he said sure.. but not sure what year.. June will happen.
another little problem... to get the truck out of his garage when it comes time... he either puts the rig on 14 inch bare rims.. or takes a chain saw and "notches " his upper garage door by about a foot...

Re: 1982 Cx500P
It's been reported that the trike was offered to the public. How many out of the reported 250 no one knows. Where this picture was taken is also unknown. Based on the salesman look...he just did a quick mental equation and his sales commission might cover lunch at Mac D's.

Re: 1982 Cx500P
Patent papers. One odd item.. which I think was a Chicago request.. the patent paper with the front of the box.. item #21.. also seen in the previous color photo...is a " ticket box ".
The top of my box doesn't have the added chrome bars.. but the bike was offered with approx. 200 options.

Re: 1982 Cx500P
My trike has the ticket box on the right side of the fairing, positioned such that it will bash my right knee
Based on your earlier photos and the patent drawings, our trikes are substantially different:
- The trike in the patent drawings has a HUGE "swingarm" (your appears to have one as well), mine is a hard tail rear end with small coilovers under the seat.
- Your exhaust is piped under the rear end, mine has Honda megaphones.
- The trike in the showroom photo has a windshield fairing, mine has a Pacifico fairing.
There must have been several production runs of these machines to account for the differences.

Re: 1982 Cx500P
I know of two other Cx500P's under going restoration. One is in Chicago and has the same frame as mine. The other is a Ex Phoenix PD unit owned by a Minnesota snowbird near Lake Pepin. He has the other frame unit (see photos). Narrowed Ford axle... massive frame. He hasn't done anything with the rolling unit yet but had the box restored. Not sure if the lights are correct. He'll return with the sun.. around late May.
I know the company that built these had a contract for 250 units.. So.. did they run out of Dana 44 rear ends... like mine and switched to Ford.. or ? Is there a possibility of two manufactures.. ?
The units were offered with many options...colors.. shields and faring's...lights, electronics.. radios. Research is always part of the discovery.
Today .. one.. new tire was drop'd off for the trike. The other is back ordered until 3 March. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......

Re: 1982 Cx500P
Got the seat back from the upholster shop. Since all that was left of the stock seat was a rusty plate... I had no clue as to the cover. So I decide to go with basket weave on top with pain sides and white stich'n.
In previous photos you can see we had to cut the seat down to clear the ice cream box. The Coker 600-16's hit my doorstep and will be mounted shortly. If Ma Nature settles down.. test drive !
