CX650C restoration

for those of you that have M.B.S. (multiple bike syndrome) and have the "silver wing" models.
as our sponsors also have supplies for those bikes and they are popular with the "wing" crowd.

CX650C restoration

#1

Post by patnorth »

Hi lads, as I am new to the forum please let me introduce myself with a few words - I am Patrick, I live in the south of the green island and entertain myself with restoring old Hondas as a pastime. Currently I am working on a CX650Custom and I am trying to source a camshaft (part no. 14100-ME2-000) as the existing has a shattered rev counter drive. I do actually have 2 used cams of which one is missing the drive for the coolant pump and the other one clearly coming out of an overheated engine, discolored and pitting on the fingers. Any ideas?
greets, Patrick

Parts for those engines are now all made from unobtainium. The few used cams I've seen all have rust and pitting around the waterpump seal, which makes them worthless. There are outfits that weld and re-grind pitted cams, but I expect the cost to be high. 650 cams are different from 500 cams, because of the mechanical fan drive on the front of the 500s. Too bad, because there are a lot more 500 cores than 650s.

As far as corrosion around the water pump seal bit goes you can use a Speedi Sleeve to rectify that for a lot less than the cost of getting it fixed at a machine shop.

As far as the camshafts go here's a 500 and 650 side by side;

The profiles are quite different - and as mentioned above, there's the obvious physical difference of the 650 cam lacking the fan nose.

I may have a CX650 cam in the parts bin and will check once I can get up into the garage attic. I will let you know.
Checked and it went out with the block in spring cleaning last year.
