Do you guys use water or lube with the steel wool? I've also ripped off a few of the half sponge, half fine scotchbrite things my wife has and they work pretty good in some places. I have heard Scotchbrite can scratch chrome though.

The scotch-brite sponges are great for pieces you don't mind getting scratched. but they do clean really well! Most of the time I use some sort of cleaner like dish soap and water to clean without scratching.

One thing about using steel wool... If you don't wear gloves you'll get steel pices in your fingers. Almost every time I use it without gloves I'm picking wool out of my hands!

Key to an awesome clearcoat:

1. after each coat, clear or otherwise, sand with 1000 grit wet/dry paper using lots of soapy water
2. after final 1000 grit sand, sand final clear coat with 2000 using soapy water
3. buff with Meguires fine cut cleaner
4. buff with Meguires Grazing
5. Wax

Thanks Sunnbobb for those tips! I started sanding the right side cover last night. Found two spots (edges) where the paint was a tad thin. So, some more touch-up there, but I was expecting that. The rest of the cover is looking pretty good though.

I read before to use soapy water when sanding. Is there a reason for that? Lubrication? I was using just plain water but will switch to soapy water.

When you buff, are you using a power buffer? I have an orbital at the moment but from what I've been reading there's no comparison to the shine you can get with the power buffer. So, I probably will have to upgrade.

And for the Meguires products, are those available at most auto parts stores?

I'm anticipating another fine tutorial.

And if you'd seen any of my fine Orange-Peel jobs you'd know why.

Nice polishing work, paultjack! Just goes to show that perseverance and
polish can do wonders. I have rescued alloy parts deemed as scrap by
others also. That frame looks scary. Just points out that one should do a
thorough check of the frame underside and other weld points. Especially on a new (used) purchase. Will follow your progress. Good luck. Steve

Howdy, the soapy water makes the sandpaper glide over the finish. continuously dip the paper in your water to clean the grit. I also forgot to mention to use a soft sanding block and painters squeegee. after each sanding, wipe the part with the squeegee to find where the low and high spots are. Do not use your fingers behind the paper, you will come out with a wavy finish.

The mcguires products are available at almost every auto store i have seen.

I use a flat wool - re-washable 6" polishing bonnet on a hand held rotary buffer. Got it at Montgomery wards years ago. Harbor Freight has them Careful not to buff too soon after curing the clearcoat.

Lastly, any part you clean with steel wool should be washed with soap and water if you are going to paint it. Steel wool typically has a fine oil on it to keep it from rusting. Paint will not stick where the oil is deposited. My experience is that scotch brite scratches chrome.

Somebody, I think maybe Sidecar Bob, posted some information on Scotchbrite a while back. It seems the grit on that stuff is pretty hard and scratching chrome is pretty easy to do.
