Re: Rat. Fun reading back over this thread … I agree, funny how fast time flies. You will have to let us know how the hydraulic clutch works out after installation. BTW congrats on the retirement, I know what you mean by things taking longer. lolol

Not a lot of progress, but Oil and Coolant drained, Carbs are hung up (do not plan to let the carbs be a "while your at it" item), fuel disconnect and fuel filter removed, clutch disconnected, battery and stator disconnected, rear brake switch disconnected, heat shield and radiator removed, exhaust and mufflers removed, rear upper mounts removed.

Next up the starter (did not have a thin enough 10 mm open end wrench), driveshaft and lower mounts. Should have the engine out soon.

As you may recall, the headers were ceramic coated 10 years back so it will be interesting how they clean up. I expect the Sportster Muffs should clean up fine.

What you are doing sounds like a lot of work. Sometimes wish my 75 had the hydraulic clutch.

just note of interest. My 78 clutch feels the same as the one on my 85. Withhalf a million plus miles on the 78, I considered changing to hydrolic clutch. But I keep the cable lubed, and itis as esay the 85. And still works well. Maybe someday....if it wears out

I bought this 1200 Clutch from Sunnbobb some 8 years back. I may have heard him wrong about the 10 year warranty but just in case figured now was the time to update. I replaced the cable twice already and effort did drop the last time but really did not think the clutch and cable would outlast me.

So now was the time for an update. Word on the street is with a 14mm piston in the master cylinder the effort may be lower to your 1985 but not sure. Think Old Foggy may have said something to that effect.

The Engine is now out. I plan to do a few updates on the ShopTalk Engine Out link, as the 77 engine does a different engine wiring and as a newby, I can add some thoughts about removing the driveshaft circlip and such. My next task is to install the 1200 clutch, electric gas pump and such.

That didn't take long to pull the motor. The electric fuel pump install should be pretty easy. Worst part I remember was making a blocking plate to cover the old pump drive.

Yes, 11 years has left a mark. Now is the time to figure out the cause, yet it never dripped on the garage floor. The cam cover gaskets are first up.

Engine is still out but clutch is installed. Have the 1976 LTD to ride in the mean time. Need to do electrical for the pump and a few do dads before reinstalling the engine.

What's the rush if you have a spare to ride.

Regarding the dirt on the motor, I'm not sure anyone will really notice it as you pass on the left.

And I'll add that it's really nice to follow the work being done by folks who are going back in on their projects after years of riding. BADDOG was BOTM 11 years ago - if your signature is accurate.
