Here you go: Call Jeff and head to Detroit. On the way pick up a case of his favorite brew. When you get to his house, get him several beers while you engage in so sort of meaningful conversation. Next, ask if Jeff will supervise. Then, and this is key, as you begin to kneel down to work on the bike, feign a back injury. Let him help you up and put you in his favorite chair. He will then offer to finish the job. Next, sit back, relax and watch the master at work. I suggest that your recovery will last as long as the project and probably about 9 Bud lights. That's it. Enjoy!
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!

Oldewing needs Aeroplanese, Roady needs Fillyese, Gord needs Beereze, Ernie prefers Lawyerese, Robin requires Machineheadeze, and on and on. Translators for all theseze are on the Web and your browser should have them all built in.

But there is no reason that Ernie's method will not work, it is very well thought out.

On the way down to VMD, the ODO on BADDOG took a vacation on the first tank.

I used Steve's most excellent link to open up the Speedometer case.

http://ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... ter+repair

Found the first part the cable rotates, has a worm gear on it. This worm gear turns a gear for the ODO which is machined into the center of a perpendicular shaft.

That shaft "gear" was worn down and when the cable rotates it very seldom moved. The Speedo had lots and lots of graphite inside and that may have resulted in more torque on that gear set but not for sure.

The shaft gear was not easy to remove, so I just used the internal mechanism from an alternate 1977 Speedometer that had a bad outer case but a way cleaner mechanism.

Will try her out later today if all goes well.

It is more new now, the old ODO was at 63353 and the replacement down at 25067 so the bike is no longer properly broke in to use the highway. But I can still smell that "new" smell again, waho.

After many years, time for BADDOG's engine to come out. Planning to update the clutch to a hydraulic 1200 kit that SunnBobb sent out many years back, then replace belts, install an electric fuel pump, install matching VFR-750 14mm Brake and 14mm Hydraulic Clutch levers with nice 10 mm mirror mounts, and do general clean up. Plan is to get it in and out within a month but being retired, things always take longer now.
