here's even more I've learned from the trike-

Although I haven't attempted to start trike's engine with any gasoline present in the carburetors during the past 2 1/2 years, it has lent itself to be very useful to help me provide some tested ignition system troubleshooting guidance for several Club members. No, it is not completely assembled at this moment.
anyhoo
In order to be successful to crank and start the trike's engine, without having the shelter frame in place, I purchased a used 1975 GL1000 fuse box assembly from an ebay seller. It performed better than I expected when plugged into trike's wiring harness connector. Yep. It simply dangles down loose on the wiring harness.

After turning the Key Switch ON and the right handlebar "kill" switch to its RUN position , the dash panel oil pressure and neutral gear indicator light bulbs are illuminated and the engine is able to be cranked over with the starter button; additionally, the Dynatek ignition coils and Dyna S system are fully operational, too. Perfect.

A few days after helping Boyce discover his bike's ignition system was affected by a problem in its positive primary wiring supply circuit, I wondered how well my trike's voltage readings would compare when measured across its AGM battery terminals; then when measured at either of the two unplugged double female socket primary terminals under the rubber umbrella. I didn't know how to calculate the amount of voltage drop I should reasonably expect through the Dynatek ignition coil primary windings before I started testing though. :(
Aiming for consistently accurate results, I employed 2 digital multi-meters for the testing session.

Note: trike's ignition coils are powered up directly from the battery through an SPST relay, triggered to turn on by the handlebar RUN switch, black/white wire.
And
The pair of Dynatek 3 ohm ignition coils are not dumbed down with an inline ballast resistor in their positive side primary ignition wiring circuit.
.

Note: Before starting a testing session, I compared both digital multi-meters' voltage readouts, measured directly and simultaneously across the Yuasa AGM battery terminals.
The difference between the meters was 0.01 dc volts. The 30 years old black OTC meter's test leads (with screw-on alligator clips) were attached directly to the trike's AGM battery terminals.
The rarely used yellow Extech meter's black testing lead was grounded at the trike's negative battery terminal, too.

Keep in mind the pair of Dynatek 3ohm ignition coils' positive primary circuit current is delivered through an SPST relay assembly.

Gates Power Grip information- Threedom build thread

Gates Power Grip Hose Clamps p/n 32934
product information: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.ph ... 75&jsn=723

First time I utilized them on trike was mid-2012. Several times since then and never encountered a single coolant hose leak.

A Gates installation instructions video advises as long as you can apply heat, at least 120 degrees around its total circumference, the thermoplastic hose clamp will shrink down completely tightened.

This first photo was taken 2 days before the trike's last synchronization session on September 29th.
Carburetors and complete air filter assembly were presently installed. Fuel tank had been completely drained a month or so earlier through the fuel hose and fuel filter seen hanging down off the petcock. Fuel hose and filter was reattached to the fuel pump inlet hose barb fitting shortly after this photo was taken and the gallon of $20 race fuel was poured into the fuel tank. Yes, the engine was dynamically synchronized with the fuel valve flag selected to its RESERVE delivery position.

second photo was taken after the October 6th fire.
Corrected #1 and #3 synchronizer links carbs "rack" hadn't been reinstalled yet. Good for LTD spec# carburetors... not good for me...

I was stuck next to this developing fire area for a few minutes before the 4wheels battery powered mobility scooter finally moved me forward, away from the fire. Note the bronze hue the fuel pump's silver paint appearance was changed to

My 1975 GL1000 "trike" was injured in a gasoline fire continued

#385

Post by gltriker »

At this point in assessing what needs to be replaced,
both throttle cables, the choke cable, tachometer cable and clutch cable are all toasted.
The fuel pump was destroyed.
The Main wiring harness isn't salvageable. I found a NEW '75-'77 GL1000 reproduction Main wiring harness is available from an ebay seller located in Canada. It looks very complete, including 4 new diodes and their connector, too.
I believe there is a sub-wiring harness for the engine oil pressure and water temperature sending units. Haven't determined whether the primary ignition wiring is part of either of those two harness assemblies, yet. ???

I have a real nice aftermarket seat I purchased from a Club member sometime before 2018.
When I removed the burned seat Thursday afternoon, I discovered the fuel tank level sending unit and the rear lights wiring harness had both been very badly charred when the top of engine fire was travelling hidden under the seat pan.

The Dyna ignition coils are burned and the primary wires routed underneath are trashed, too. I have 2 more pairs of Dyna 3 ohm coils - not new though- on the shelf. I'm considering purchasing a pair of their much lower cost, overseas clones.
The original Dyna S leads were badly charred through the insulation where they were routed under the fuel tank. I have a very low hours Dyna S on hand to replace it.

The left hand switches housing/clutch lever perch assembly was destroyed along with the left handgrip. Was time for a new pair of grips, anyways.
There is no damage to either end of the trike's suspension and rear axle assembly components. The OEM handlebar mounted gauges were not injured.

I have to remove and inspect the fuel tank. I hope the stator wires and bung were not injured. Pulling the engine is a big job for this old dude to perform.

-to be continued-
