Re: My 77 project that will turn into a cafe racer/ Bobber with a kick
Little update....made the turbo header and the hot side of the turbo as well as the exhaust black...via ceramic coating.
I plan to cover up the header with header wrap, more or less to hide some of the pipe, and for looks.

Re: My 77 project that will turn into a cafe racer/ Bobber with a kick
There's a lot of multiplication involved between the crankshaft and the axle. Primary reduction, individual gear reduction, secondary reduction, final drive reduction, and tire/wheel size, all contribute to what you get on the road. As Honda increased the displacement and the torque, they lowered the effective overall ratios accordingly, although there are some odd excursions in the 1100 engines.
I took that gear-ratio chart and added the figures for different final drives and wheels. It's not comprehensive because I was only trying to compare the two 1200 engines I have to a stock 1000, and I had no intention of using a 1200 or a 1500 FD.
I ended up using an 1100 FD on an 85 engine, with a 130/90-17 wheel. I didn't want to lower the overall ratio at all, what with the grunt of a 1200, but I always thought the 84 1200 I had was TOO high. The intermediate gears vary a bit between the models, but I was only concerned with high.
A 130/90-16 is a Lester or a CB900 Comstar wheel, a 130/90-17 is a stock 1000 or 80-81 1000, a 140/90-16 is an 82-83 1100, and 150/90-15 is a 1200.

Well, I tried a little header wrap, and now that I am good an itchy, it is done. I am sure it could have been done another way, but being black, you don’t really see much of it when it is mounted.
What do you think?

I tend to agree, and perhaps I will pull this off if I find that no one will try to touch the turbo. I do like the look of it off.
It does hide some of the welds that I smoothed out.

You must be itching pretty bad about now. (to get it running and ride it.)
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Yes, both literally and figuratively!
Guess we should ask the experts looking at this, is there any benefit to having the wrap in relation to the turbo? I have heard that the ceramic coating will help with heat, although I am not sure by how much.

Per mile. Tire turns a calculated number of times, multiply back up through all the reductions to get crank revolutions in high gear, regardless of speed. Just happens to equal rpm at 60 mph.wingrider wrote:It would appear that you based this on 60 mph?

Gotcha, the “High gear revs per mile” made me think engine RPM, not tire rotation. Just wasn’t in that train of thought I guess.Shadowjack wrote:Per mile. Also not a fan of the wrap. Keeps the heat in the pipe, doesn't hold up well when wet. Any assumed gain in performance, and I stress assumed, is unknown. I always thought it was to eliminate heat under the hood of a car. Bike headers are open to the air. Granted it will hide ugly pipes.

Re: My 77 project that will turn into a cafe racer/ Bobber with a kick
I did a touch of reading last night, and it seems like this is a bad idea on a couple levels. The wet I am not worried to much about, as this won’t be a daily rider, but one thing I didn’t think about was that if the pipe is ceramic coated, and then wrapped, it may hold in to much heat, which will cause the ceramic coating to fail.
Now, this is most likely under the hood of a car, and not out in the open, but that is good enough for me to pull it off. I can use the wrap on another header I have here.
