All I have to compare it to is the 85 EFI, which I know is a little deeper, but don't know if a standard carbed one is any different. The efi cover measures 4 3/4" deep. The 84 measured 4 3/8".

Something has to be different. My 86 in a 77 frame is a lot tighter then that

I suspect the jigs the welders used varied that much?? Yours is the biggest gap I've seen yet. It's enough to change the balance of the whole bike.

It certainly seems odd...half tempted to toss the EFI block into the frame, and see how that one fits in the 77.

Keep up the good work. We're all learning. Been looking for a cheap 1200.

I have been thinking about lopping off the fuel pump stub on the right head...going to run an electric pump, and my tach is electric as well, so I really don't need it there. I have to check, but I think I have a cover that would fit over it. Am I correct in thinking that all I would need to do is put a seal on the end of the cam and button it up?

Yep Robin, figured many that know about it don't always look at the build threads, so I took a chance and posted it in the technical section with more of a question base.

Decided that I would knock off the end of the cam shaft...went pretty easy! Now I just need to get a couple parts to keep it from leaking oil all over!

Little update...would like to get this engine off the stand and get anther one in its place, but wanted to paint it as long as it was up there. So, stripping all the old paint off, we had a go at putting some color on. Had a mess of trouble with the primer...something was wrong with the can, it shot great big blobs of primer everywhere. Not a good deal, but the final cost seemed to cover well...see what you think:

I think it turned out ok...need to touch up a couple areas, but pretty good coverage all the way around it. action1

Looks like a black 1200 with 77 heads to me. Got 'er done.

Got a bit more done...engine is in the frame, (hopefully for good) the clutch slave cylinder was rebuilt before it went in the frame. I wanted to check the stator, but if I have to pop it back out, it isn't such a big deal yet.

I also got the manifolds on, with the nitrous injectors in place, shiney valve covers on, installed the C5 module, and tossed on Randakk's spin on filter conversion.

She's getting closer!

I am not getting any photos at the moment and maybe they cover my question but what did you do to cover the camshaft after you knocked off the fuel pump drive? I need something on my 78 build and although I planned to cut something out of aluminum, maybe you had a better idea??

I used a bit of the remaining aluminum plate I had. Was a tad tricky getting the correct shape, but it seemed to work.
