Went ahead and got the carbs all synced up today. As I suspected, they were pretty out of whack. I was able to get them really close to even. She's still a bit lazy returning to idle, though. I may need to fiddle with it a bit more, or I might have a vacuum leak somewhere. Either way, it's too cold to mess with it any more today. She's getting closer, I just need to dial things in so they're perfect.

Maybe get a tank or two of fuel through her first, you never know what miles can take care of until you try.

I have been following this thread with interest and I admire your patience.

Thanks Liam. I managaed to get a part-time job, which should keep me afloat for a while. I'm considering actually relocating to look for a career in my field (Fine Arts) rather than just a local full time job for the cash. We'll see.

I did a bit of fiddling today with the mixture screws. Not sure what I did exactly, but she seems to be running a bit better than it did yesterday. I'm going to keep an eye on No. 2, as I'm still getting some occasional popping back through the airbox. It's VERY intermittent though, so at this point just RIDING the thing (and getting everything to settle down and start working together) is probably the best thing for it.

NOW ONLY IF THE SNOW WILL GO AWAY!!!!

Always a good idea to run two tanks of fuel before additional fixes. May clean right up.

Bike is looking good. Seeing the scenery in the background makes me homesick! (well, not exactly, it is about 75 degrees here in Texas, but it does look familiar.)

Don't get to carried away trying to dial in the carbs yet. Wait till the temps get in to the 50's or 60's to get them real good. And make sure the engine is up to operating temp.

Even if it is 60 in the shop it will still be different once you get the bike outside.

Well, wouldn't you know it, my radiator fan switch decided today would be the prefect day to crap out on me. I went ahead and read the various shop articles on replacing it, but for some reason I'm kind of anal, so I'd like to replace it with one as close to stock as possible. BUT because I'm poor, I think in the meantime I'll just wire it up to a manual switch on the handlebars and call it good enough. Go figure.

I wish I'd seen that thermoswitch fixit post when I started messing with GLs. I've had to replace them on all three GLs I've had or have, using the cheapo aftermarket ones.

I had no idea the OE ones were rebuildable.

I do know the neutral light switch is rebuildable though....I stripped the one on the rig down, and rebuilt after cleaning it and it works perfectly now.

I finally got the switch apart, and a stuck pin is NOT the problem- in fact, it slid out as soon as I got the end off. Guess that means I'm going shopping...

Did you look up inside the hole where the pin is? Often there is a gray/whitish sludge that collects there keeping the pin from operating. Take one or two strands from a stranded wire and use it to clean it out in there.
