Since I haven't done anything the past couple days except think about working on my project I thought I might throw some questions out to you guys:

1.) I'm looking at replacing a few burnt out connectors. I am looking at using the weatherpack style. I did a little search and found people are using the vintage connectors. Is this just to keep it as original looking as possible?

2.) Are the timing belt covers chromed or painted? It's flaking off and from what I've read chrome is a pain to remove.

Your's may be chromed. Many PO's got their aluminum covers chromed. the only problem is that the aluminum is soft and the hard chrome will flake off. Only problem is not all the chrome will flake off and it looks terrible. I have three sets sitting around that I cannot use for that reason. I ended up getting a non chromed set and polished them up. They where almost black with tarnish and I used 400 grit then 800 grit then mother's paste aluminum polish and they look nice. Now there are guyes on this site that polish them up almost as bright as chrome you might look them up.

There may also be a way to grind the chrome off. I'm not aware of the best way.

From all that I have read, the best way to remove chrome is to take it to a chromer. It may be MUCH less expensive to get another set on eBay.

For the connectors, just make sure you use connectors big enough to handle the current loads, then go for it.

Mine were chromed by the third owner and even though the chrome is flaking off a a tiny bit I still like the chrome. IF you have access to a bead blaster you might try blasting the chrome off with glass beads. My chrome fenders were a mess so I bead blasted them and had them painted. I was pleased with the outcome.

Well, not much to report. I've fiddled a little bit. Removed some wires that aren't connected on either end. Drained the oil, it was nice and black but not pure sludge. Not sure if that means the sludge is all still in there or not. I did receive a set of carbs from rogue1000 and some other misc parts as well as a few surprises. Thanks, Brian! I think I have plenty of parts to get me in trouble, now if someone could fedex me some time I'll get some stuff done!

I can't believe it's been 6.5 years, but I am finally digging back into my project. I've been trying to remember where I was and figuring out all the parts I have. I think I have a good handle on it but am worried about rust on my timing belt pulleys and tensioners. Am I hosed? Do they need replaced or will I be able to get that rust off of there and use them?

Welcome back! On the rust, you should be able to remove it fairly easily, as it looks to be mostly surface rust. I would check out the tensioners carefully to make sure they're in good rolling condition (there's a relatively inexpensive replacement thread in ShopTalk if needed).
Oh, and get new belts, even if those were new. Sitting for that long in one position will ruin them.

OK, thanks. I'll try cleaning them up. I was a little worried they may be shot but figured if I needed to get new ones I'd start looking into that.

Was looking at some of my electrical system yesterday. The PO relocated the fuse to the trunk/glove box which is good but used indoor wire connectors. I think I'll update to either a breaker or a blade style fuse like I've seen on a lot of the others

Starter solenoid doesn't look great. Do these usually clean up? I haven't tested it yet, don't want to crank the motor right now. Are they hard to find? My google search seemed to bring up 3rd party options. You can also see some more great wiring work.

Hoping to get some time this weekend to get the transmission cover and water pump put back in and change out the belts.

Resist the temptation to buy a cheap aftermarket solenoid ... they can fail dramatically ...

I finally have a handle on where I was with this rebuild. I'll need to pick up a few more things but have a question about coils/plugs/ignition. Bear in mind my main goal is to see if the engine will run before spending too much more time/money on it.

Bike has a Dyna III ignition. No idea it if works. Any good tips for testing it? I came across a troubleshooting guide that says to pull the plugs, place them back in the caps, lay them on the block and see which ones fire. If I'm getting spark assume all is well or could there still be issues?

I was planning on changing spark plug wires then found out they are part of the coils. Will the old ones be good enough to see if it runs or should I really replace coils, wires and caps. The screws in the caps are a little dirty but I think would clean up without much fuss.

Also, looks like they added what I am assuming is another resistor in parallel with the ballast resistor. Any idea why or what that is supposed to do?

I would say the old wires would be good enough to at least see if you have spark. If you decide to replace the coils, check in to the neon coil swap in shop talk.

Don't waste energy cleaning those corroded spark plug cap terminals.
Buy 4 new spark plug caps.

NGK XD05F.

Ref. NGK #8072, for your local auto parts counter folks.
Buy them local.
NAPA and similar sources have them in their catalog.
5 bucks each is average price.

From the look of it, unplugging and thoroughly cleaning EVERY SINGLE CONNECTOR on the motorcycle would be time well spent. If not, you will be chasing gremlins in the future. Perhaps on the side of the road in an unsavory part of town...

(Seriously, spend some time on sprucing up that harness (not the least of which will include getting rid of the wire nuts!)

Better to be proactive than reactive. That one shows the result of years of neglect. Needs love.
