The beer may have come later, lol.

I think going back up, we'll forgo installing the forks, wheels, etc. Hopefully I won't be needing to do this again. The plan for the summer calls for building a small (12' x 12') shop...
leave the wheels off, strap it to your dolly and build "rails" up the stairs out of 2x4's with a 1x3 guide screwed to the outside edge of the rails to keep the wheels on the 2x4's.

Had a little time after work to spend looking over the '79. Got it up on the lift, blew some debris out of the plug wells, and sprayed them down with PB Blaster. I really didn't need to, as they had only been snugged up. A flashlight inspection through the plug holes revealed some fine rust on the cylinder walls (from what I could see) but I don't think it's significant enough to worry about at this point. Gave each cylinder several squirts of oil, then a good spray of PB and let it set while I dropped the rear portion of the exhaust. Most everything has been removed once before i bought the bike, I guess, because nothing has been too difficult to remove.
Gave each cylinder another squirt of oil, then removed the cover from the stator housing, and the engine turned right over. Yipee Skippy! Finally, I drained the oil and antifreeze, both off which looked old but normal.
Next step will be to remove the wheels and tires, front forks, and radiator, then on to the engine itself!

While I don't recall the exact details, the early comstar wheels that were recalled had aluminum 'spokes', and were replaced by wheels with steel spokes, correct? Looks like they missed a set... and in such nice shape, too...

Possibly 4-spoke to 5-spoke, adding strength against buckling maybe? (What I knew on '87 883 cc).

Concerning the wheels, a search revealed that it only involved the '78 comstar wheels. As the parts bike is '79, we're good!

On another note, pulled the radiator and associated parts, and made a quick check of the belts and water pump. Napa belts look like new (but will be replaced), and :( :( :( about a 1/4 inch side-to-side play in the pump. I think I'll try the rebuild route...

Do you have a link to the recall info? My 78 has what appear to be aluminum comstars.

I found this on SOHC4.net, but can't tell where he got the info from other than what he states:

Quoted from the original recall:

WHEEL REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE:
1. Check frame serial number. Affected units are within frame serial number range GLI-
4000022 through 4003349.
2. If the unit is within the affected serial number range, check the front wheel by placing a
magnet against the spoke blades.
If the front wheel spoke blades attract the magnet, they are steel, and the wheel does
not require replacement.
If the front wheel spoke blades do not attract the magnet, they are aluminum, and the
front wheel must be replaced.
NOTE: This recall campaign concerns the fron t wheel only. It IS proper for the rear
wheel to have aluminum spoke blades.

I guess all you need is a magnet. But remember, this is only for FRONT wheels on a 78, the 79 had aluminum wheels that were OK.

As Sugs says above, or I did a search thus: +comstar +recall One of the first threads, Roncar (the site's 'historian') gives details...

Just to throw more in the game, my 80-82 Comstars are all aluminum, and my 78 CX500 Comstars are steel. Those are the original style, the ones with the convex side of the stamping facing out, as in the picture above.

Finally 'de-framed' the '79 engine. A tad grungy, but nothing a little elbow grease won't take care of. I'm liking not having to think about prep and paint, lol!
Next up is pulling the starter for a little cleaning, as well as removing the water pump and trying a rebuild.
