Re: 76 LTD-#5961-period correct resto-refurb. H
Hey folks...had a slow summer work wise, and this project got stalled...had time but no $s . I also had a period of indecision about what i wanted to do with it....make it OEM and sell, or go with my original vision of a very cool resto-retro-dresser.
A big thanks to Wayne.. ...i picked his brain about the OEM/ sell route that hes done a few times with LTD's...the info really helped me make up my mind. So, to heck with the so called "soft market"...i was getting ahead of myself thinking about future projects and the cash required and was going to sell this beauty....DUH!...so now i'm just going to keep plugging away as the funds allow, and if it ain't finished till next summer, so be it.
So lately I've been doing stuff that's more labor and not so much bucks. The fairings wiring was crap from the start so I built two small wiring harness' , one from the headlight shell to an eight pin plug i stole off an old wing harness, and one for the inside of the fairing. I'm trying to make the set up as easy as possible to remove the fairing if i want to go nekkid in the summer. I also cut the fairing mount in half and bolted it back together as it was almost impossible to remove or install without taking the rad shrouds off..now its easy...about a half an hour. I also made a low windshield, and got the material for a taller one..... next will be the bags......(but ya know it does have a pretty cool look, with the big fairing hiding a skinny cool old bike.)
I know this ain't the place for dressers, but just LOOK! at her...i don't know about you, but i'm in love..

Thanks AL!....it seems that more than a few REALLY nice OEM restos are popping up lately, and well, lets just say I've never been one to follow the herd...( sometimes good, sometimes, not so much:-) ) ....so i'm glad I left the "barn door*" on it.

She's a beauty! The fairing is very distinctive, and cutting down the windshield makes a huge difference in the looks department, IMHO. Enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the kind words....and any after this.
I (finally!) got a bunch of work in...feast or famine it seems...so i may not check in much in the next week or two.
Two things that really made me keep the faring on was 1) stylistic continuity, the curves and soft lines really blend well with the early wing style, unlike more angular fairings that always look to me, style wise, like an after thought.
and, 2) this bike was dressed shortly after it was purchased by the first owner, a Japanese engineer who was working in York, Pa. at the time....the fact it all survived as well as it did is pretty amazing, and i didn't want to change that.
...well, off to the grindstone.

I am usually quick to strip the fairings off these old bikes but you did right to leave it on, it is unique and very attractive. The bike is looking beautiful.

Just WOW. Keep the fairing. Being a new-ish guy has its benefits in that I just got to read six years worth of your build in one sitting.
