Let the party begin. Couple of 76 GL1000s

Post by palepainter »

I have been doing a lot of reading here on the site in the past few months. During that time I have been working on a 76 GL, giving it a bit of a café treatment to it. I used a Victory V92 rear fender for the tail and made mounts that would be hidden and no bolts come into contact with the paint on the exterior. Being a painter, that was a priority. :) The seat pan is a modified stock glass pan that is secured partially using stock mounts and one rear anchor that is accessed under the tail section.

I am running a HD Vrod headlight from Drag Specialties. I think I am going to cut off the flange for the turnsignals on the headlight mouting brackets and flip them upside down between the trees. That should drop the headlight a bout 1.5 inches. Intakes from Randakk's and Webers from Pierce Manifolds. What a fiasco getting real Webers these days.

The bike is presently torn down for blasting and paint. Then on to the motor.

The white 76 is a recent purchase that I just could not pass up. Just needed typical carb rebuild. 14000 miles and very clean stock bike for the most part. Some little stuff missing...signals, radiator shrouds.

Finished up a few versions of paint scheme. Sent off seat to get finished. The rest of the bike is in primer or getting blasted.

51 is just my lucky number. It is the number I attach to my racing vehicles. Has really brought me any luck, who knows? :)

Really like the way you integrated the seat pan and the rear fender. Regarding the headlight mounts, check out "out of the dumpster" in Underground Customizing (the other forum here). I think it works well to turn the brackets upside down but I was using 1100 forks. White bike looks exceptionally clean.

Thanks Easter. That is what I am hoping to do. I have an extra headlight mount that I can cut down to see how it comes out before I destroy the ones that are good. I just have to cut off the extra part that is welded on the bottom that covers up lower tree and provides mounting for turn signals.

Got most of the paint work finished up this week. A lot of blasting, powdercoating left on components.

I love and hate looking at nice paint jobs. Looks fabulous, but immediately reminds me of my poor work.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Nice work Mike, love the VolksRod. Question: what is a good tape for masking between colors, the best for a crisp edge?
