Look what followed me home!

Not a GL but still a kinda neat rare bike.

1984 Yamaha FJ1100L priced so I couldn't pass on it.

None of the hydraulics worked and were bone dry. A PO had opened all of the bleeders he could find. Also drained the fuel tank and carbs before putting it in a garage for a couple of years.

A couple of minutes in the sand blasting cabinet and some "Roll Bar" paint:

How it looks now. At least it was easy to pull tank and side covers. Because of the frame design it was easy to remove carbs. 4 Mikuni BS36 which are my favorite carbs to rebuild.

Image

The clutch cover had a hole in it where the brake pedal had punched it. Obviously from dropping the bike on the right side.

More to come.

I had the hole welded closed then I put JB weld on the weld and the outside to assure a seal and to build up the dent. It turned out nice I think:

We took a few test rides just around the block. Had some minor issues we have to deal with. I think total we have ridden it about 4 miles. Starts and runs ok. I think next step is check valve lash, ignition timing and carb sync/idle drop. It just seems a little lazy to me. Like the timing is retarded or mechanical advance is frozen (if it has a mechanical advance). There is a vacuum line from #2 cylinder that goes to the ignition module. I'll check it out.
