I too had to laugh and thought of slaughtering chickens from the pictures. Glad you got it to start moving. My 84 interstate was the same scene, 5+ years and around 25,000 miles ago

Need to clean the gas tank next. Fairly heavy rust with some crud in the bottom that is currently soaking in something to loosen it up. Not the worst rust I have ever encountered so probably going to use electrolysis. Does anyone know the thread size of the drain plug so I can build a drain with a tap in advance of the removing the plug?
Last time I did one of these tanks - my 76 - I sucked everything out through the filler pipe and the sender hole and hoped for a non-explosive mix.

Hello Mark.
About draining the fuel tank.....I don't know if this suggestion would be of any use to you. Works very well for my trike though. But, I've only drained stale gasoline. No rust involved.
Install a section of fuel hose onto the fuel valve nipple and drop the other end into a suitable catch container. Turn the fuel valve to the 'reserve' position. Then, utilizing your air compressor and a blowgun and rag, judiciously pressurize the fuel tank through the filler neck.
This method effectively drains my trike's fuel tank liquid contents.

Poking around a bit more over the past week.
Starting to realize this was someone's parts bike at one time. Odd bits are missing such as acorn nuts here and there and wires are cut and things are loosened and disconnected for no apparent reason.
Today I took the rad out and realized for the first time that the coils and all the associated wires are missing and they aren't in the container of parts that came with the bike.
I am going to install electronic ignition so will I need the old wiring?
Meanwhile I pulled the rad to start cleaning up the belt covers and see how bad the rust was inside.
I also, last week, poured some vinegar in the tank to start the de-rusting process while the cold weather is still here.
The good news, it only took 11 litres to fill the tank so that tells me there is eight litres of fuel and crud in there that hopefully held off the rust in the bottom of the tank - considering the lean angle into the equation as well which should mean no rust around the pick up screen and the petcock.
Poking away slowly and beginning to dismantle and clean while assessing the financial requirements to get this running again.
Began the mechanical cleaning of the belt covers and washed the painted parts and realized the paint is all bubbled and chipped under the crap that was on them.

Finally good enough weather to open and clean the gas tank. As I suspected there is a definite level where the gas and crud were that is not rusted and the top half of the tank that is super rusted.
Spent a few hours lifting sticky crap off the bottom and ran multiple loads of soap and water through along with a little light scrubbing with a brush on the end of a coat hook. Pumped and vacuumed everything out.
Left it soaking with a last load of soap and water while I gather stuff for electrolysis.
Hopefully by the end of the week I will have a clean enough tank. And then with an engine that turns over and a clean tank I have enough of a start for a project.
Also repaired a tear in the seat over the past two days and have spent the past two weekends sanding aluminum belt covers and valve covers. Have to get the polisher set up to finish them off before pics.

So it is July 15. I filled the tank to clean it one more time, in fact several times, then left it to soak in vinegar and water 50/50 and then I filled it to clean it one more time and it froze. Then I found a CB900 that just needed to be put back together.
The cap was off and the sender was out while it froze and sat there all this time and that actually worked a lot of the rust off over the past few months. When I vacuumed the water out (I made a shop vac attachment with a hose the goes into the tank) there was a pile of loose crud on the bottom. And most of the remaining hard core rust was along the top of the tank. Also, a lot of the remaining petroleum product that was in the tank was floating on the water.
Yesterday finally got the electrolysis going. 1/2 kg of pool PH+ in a tank of water. I left the tank in the bike, petcock in place, wires disconnected to the sender, sender in place and a steel threaded rod as my anode and I ground off a bit of paint on the tank seam to connect the negative terminal. I have a 5A battery charger that is hooked up to it.
Works great. I cleaned off the anode after six hours and again this morning which would have been about 18 hours and then I cleaned out the tank and put another load of ph and water in and started it again.
If I can load the pics you will see the set up - it's pretty basic and took 10 minutes. The steel rod is run through a broken piece of paint stick and held in place on the stick with a nut on top and on the bottom. It is just sitting there not touching the tank but not taped or otherwise attached.
Hopefully I'll be able to load a pic of the slightly customized CB900, then the leads for the electrolysis and a pic I got of the second cleaning of the anode.
Good news, no leaks in the tank. Troubling news - I am going to have to figure out how to get the last of the crud, after the red rust is gone, off the inside top of the tank.
