I've tried plastic welding on these before. They fail as well for the same reason. Incompatibility. Plastic welding works when the plastics being welded are the same as the weld material. No kits I've seen match the plastic in these old covers.

This stuff stuck better than anything I've tried in the past. If it hadn't been cranked /levered like it was it may not have a been a perfect bond but it may have held. The original piece was holding well as well, until it was levered by the tab. I couldn't break it off with my hands.

I will try again with a thinner tab and a more gentle attitude.

Unless I am mistaken the tab was missing to begin with. Hard to weld something on that is missing.

fortunately I still had a piece from a broken tab. I used abs cement and then cut a piece of fiberglass and reinforced the inside with the glass an a layer of abs cement

I just cut a piece of aluminum angle and use JBWeld to glue it to the cover. Several of them have held up very well.

Hi Sunrise, if you can get somebody with a 3d printer to make that tab for you then try the Qbond.
Hope this gives you an idea.
I have a K100rt and the R/S fairing had a broken tab. I did not have the Qbond at the time just drilled a hole and screwed it on.
Good luck.

I think the problem with just attaching a tab is that there is so little surface to attach and the glue/adhesive/cement is never as good as OEM. that is why I used some glass/cement behind the tab

Yes that would sure give it more support and make it stronger.

Thanks for the tips and hints.

Definitely going back at this soon.

Had a hernia operation two days after I broke the tab and got behind at work so after I catch up I am going to try this again.

Cheers

So back at it today. What is it they say about stupid - keep trying the same thing hoping for a different result ...

Anyway, built the panel back up. This time I used a dremel to cut back to fresh plastic and then used gorilla tape and popsicle sticks to hold the shape. It came out a little thin in the end but I will try to add a bit to it later. After it cures for another day I will try to put a bit of a tab on it - keeping it thin this time. Just enough to hold it in place. After all the spring and screw at the bottom should actually hold the panel. Stay tuned ...

Oh yeah and by the way - I still stand by the claim that this stuff can replace and fill in missing pieces on these old panels - as long as it gets a good grip on clean plastic.

So it's certainly not the most beautiful job, and the popsicle stick, tape, toothpick, hot glue and paint stick mold I made slipped during the cure so it's not quite slanted the correct way, and it is smaller than the original, but it holds well enough and slips into place easily.

I might fill the gaps, I might not. So other than cleaning up a few remaining slops, I'm calling it done so time to get this ready for paint.

Does anyone know how to test a fuel gauge that is out of the bike for a 77?

Use an ohm meter to check for continuity between to two posts on the back. If you have any,...most likely the gauge is good.. Most problems are related to the sending unit in the tank. Or the 7v unit that reduces the voltage to the unit
