Hukmut, I do have a hardcopy Clymers and a digital Honda manual (forgot about that one till I read your reply). They will be a huge help. Also do have the downloaded diagrams but my old eyes have trouble with them even using a magnifying glass (g) Will likely be asking here for help as there is nothing better than asking from folks with hands on experience. Thanks for making a Newbie feel welcome. It has been a very cold winter up here on the Canadian Prairies and I was itching to get into a project. Hope to get some more items off the bike this aft.

Instrument pod gone, compressor gone, fuel pump and tach drive installed.
The speedo cable we have from the 82 aspy is a no go so ordered one for an 83 standard (now discontinued)from Ebay. Lots of stuff to sort out as the 83 wiring is a fair bit different than the harness on the instrument cluster from the 82 aspencade.

5speed Glad to hear you are having a nice winter down east.

From that last photo, I can see another issue you will probably run into... The ignition switch is offset. It is centered between the speedo and tach on the earlier models. You may have to swap the upper triple tree plate as well...

Hey Track T we discovered that yesterday when we tried to install the gauge set! Fortunately there is an upper triple tree plate still on our parts carcass. Thanx for the heads up. Also have to find another manual Schrader fitting for the rear shocks. seems like the one we stole from the compressor is holding fine on the front fork. Will try some auto supply stores.

Anyone contemplating making a standard out of a 83 aspencade from 82 or earlier parts has several things to consider: Amongst those are:
The top plate on the triple tree has to be changed over to accept the older style speedo and tach set up. The spacing of the mounting studs and ignition switch do not match. The ignition switch from the 83 aspencade does not swap over and you will need a switch from an 82(or earlier?). Went through that today and fortunately had an 82 aspencade carcass to swap parts from. Next step is to match the wiring harness up. Having a good time figuring things out.The bike still runs like a champ!

The speedo drive from an earlier gl will fit. Just be sure that the axle is tight (but not too tight) against the drive. I put '85 front forks to an '81 frame and had that issue.(not tight enough, speedo skips and quits working.) An issue I hope to resolve in the a.m.
Keep going with patience! :orange

Hey Hukmut, solved my problem (I think) by getting a cable for an 83 standard. Time will tell once I install and get it rolling. Wish you success getting yours ticking over properly.

Ran into a leaky crossover coolant pipe. Decided to remove them both and start fresh. Was going to take the carb tops off & the intakes to do a polish job on them so might as well do the o-rings in the coolant system at the same time.
Cleaned the outer parts of the carb assembly before polishing.

Polished the carb caps today. two hours on the polishing wheel! Really came out nice

Also with the guidance of my trusty mechanic friend installed new O-rings in the coolant cross tubes and homemade gaskets for the tube coolant joints. As metric is hard to find he used size 116 Standard O-rings, W-3/32", I.D. 3?4"and O.D. 15/16". We used silicon spray lube to help the tubes and O-rings seat. They seem to be a bit tighter that the OEM rings and so far no leaks. May be a better solution than the OEM O-rings, we shall see.

I love my bike (an 83 Aspy in very nice condition) and not trying to talk anyone out of this project. But you should be aware of some of the obstacles in stripping an 83 Aspencade to the extent that it resembles (as close as possible)a 1983 Gl1100 Standard. Here I am assuming that you are wanting to do away with the fairing, on board compressor, do away with the digital gauge set up etc.
There are many parts that are required.
Not in order but:
1. You will need an analogue speedo/tach set up (anything gl1100 prior to the 83)Aspencade
2. You will need a fuel pump with integrated mechanical tach drive and You will require a tach cable.
3. A speedo cable from an 83 Standard or Interstate. I am told that you can adapt a speedo drive from an earlier gl1100 but I have no experience doing this.
4.An air valve from a Gl1100 that allows you to manually inflate front or rear shocks to recommended PSI. One can be scavenged from the throw away air compressor so you will be looking for one more. Front or rear your choice
5. You will require a triple tree top plate as the one on the 83 Aspencade digital dash pod does not mate with the standard gauge set up.
6. You will need a an earlier "keyed" ignition as the 83 Aspencade ignition does not fit the above triple tree top plate.
7. You will need a rear tail light assembly with turn signals as the 83 Aspencade turn signals were built into the side bags.
8. You will need a headlight assembly with mounting ears and front turn signals.
9. Mirrors with 10mm threaded mounts to replace those on the fairing.

This is my list so date. I am still working on the switch over on the wiring harness. it has been interesting so far! I still really like my bike but a few issues have added to the cost. Lucky to have a friend with an 82 Aspencade parts bike so this is just a just a heads up.

You are on the right track. Just keep going! It will all be worth it. In the end, you will have a beautiful bike that you can say "I built this". :orange And know also, that you have brought a bike that was seemingly destined for the scrapper, back to life. action1
Honda made it, but you built it as your own.

Ya Hukmut have really enjoyed the process so far. Rebuilt a basket case 78 too many years ago to remember. Just posting this list so that I will have a reference and anyone else contemplating stripping an 83 Aspy will know that it not merely taking stuff off to Standardize this one. Thanx for the encouragement.
