Well finally got off my butt and finished off the front turn signal and headlight install. I am thinking the bike is close to being done (OK they are never done), seems like all required gauges except the temp gauge (fan cuts on/off when required tho) are functioning properly. All lights headlight hi -lo beam, brake lights, signals etc, are OK so am thinking that a ride may be in order tomorrow. Have to register the bike etc but other than that should be good to go for a test run.

She is looking the part of an 83 Gl1100 standard. I am really liking the bike so far. Will send better pics when I get her outside and take some full shots. My shop is too small to get a complete view.

Looks nice!
I cut 1 1/4" off each end of the handlebars with a chop saw.
Really makes a difference. I then measured the amount cut off and drilled the "locating" holes for the switches. That puts your hands a bit closer together, making the "not so far out there".
I know that some folks like the "ape hangers" style, not me. The amount removed is hardly noticeable just looking, but again, really makes a difference.
Ride safe, and good luck.

Couple of pics with me and my aspencade stripped down to her bare bones. Had a ride today and all the work and $ were worth the feeling of being on a "motorcycle" ! Smooth power and a gr8 feeling. Thinking that all that weight taken off has really improved her performance.

Thanx Track T, Hukmut and Robin for the kind words. Good to have it out of the shop for now. Still a few things to do before I will be satisfied like painting the faux tank to get rid of the fairing look on the side panel, need Standard radiator shrouds (wings), have to put in a temp sender as the one meant for digital instruments is a two wire and doesn't work and will likely recover the seat in Black. But these other than the temp sender are minor things and will likely have to wait until next winter unless I can find a set of rad shrouds on Ebay or?

Ya know Jonesz, ya got me thinkin about attacking my 83A to make it a naked standard when I arrive back to SoCal for the winter in a few weeks. It's been setting on a jack for 4 years with the forks off, haven't had the money for new tubes that are needed. Yours looks good. Any new updated pics?

No new pics but have added rad shrouds, a small windshield (needed some bug and wind protection), new front tire (Dunlop 404 matching the rear) to get rid of the ancient 491 and have redone the seat in plain black. It is currently too crappy to take any new pics. We had 16" of heavy wet snow last weekend.
Am currently working on my 78 Gl1000 and she is getting all my extra cash these days.
Have fun redoing your 83. I have enjoyed riding mine this past summer.

I would suggest that you contact the Master of the Grumpy old Biking Bastards Club.

I am sure he will have some advise for you.

Good luck

Pretty sure the false tank side panels need to be interchanged to Standard side panels as the fairing integrated into them. Of coarse you have a blank canvas so there are other options for something starting with your false side panels and some custom work. Should be a great bike when you are done since the blank canvas you are starting with runs so well and will only improve.

Are you thinking of the side panels on the 1200? I thought the 83 was not integrated.
