It's on my list but I haven't done it yet with a gauge. They do all feel about the same by my finger over the plug hole test but I know I need to use something a bit more accurate.

Re: 1978 GL1000 My 1st GL
Been a slow week for working on the bike but I did get the radiator back in place. Haven't filled the fluids. Need to sort out the fan switch. Been spending a lot of quality time riding the other bike. It's about 95 degrees here so I am not spending a large amount of time in the garage. Steel buildings tend to heat up a bit so it's a little warm in there. Have also been working on a honey do list, spending some time with the family, and enjoying not being at work.

Home from Vintage Days. A few parts to play with now. Got a front brake master cylinder, set of heat shields for the exhaust which included the missing right muffler heat shield that was missing as well as factory screws and washers to put it on with, and from the NGW crew a complete set of the painted parts including the side covers I need and a radiator grill.

Re: 1978 GL1000 My 1st GL
Now I'm sure some of you have encountered plenty of weird/wrong/innovative/awful things done by previous owners to some of your bikes. I know I've seen some things on various vehicles and machines over the year that make you go "WHAT???!!!". Today I found this under some electrical tape on the bottom of my fuel tank. I was pulling the tank out anyway so I left it in place until I got the tank out. I guess if you don't have anything else available just shove a stick in the hole to plug it up.

Apparently it worked! (sort of anyway) And the price was right. Metric or Standard?

Re: 1978 GL1000 My 1st GL
What amazed me was that it didn't leak! There was gas in the tank. I may just take this thing and dip it in some polyurethane a few times after it dries out from the gasoline. Then drill a small hole in it and put it on my key ring

Re: 1978 GL1000 My 1st GL
So, what should be in that hole? I'm guessing some type of drain plug? Like what is typically found on an oil pan or what? Need to plug the hole up so I can try cleaning the tank. I took the sending unit apart and carefully cleaned the rust out of the inside of it today. got the tricky side done then took my dremel tool and a wire brush wheel to the inside of the cover, put the cover back on and hit the outside of it. Tested it on my multimeter and it still functions the same as before cleaning. Cleaned up some more parts. Painted a few things. Fitted the cover that was missing from the right muffler. Still has to come back off until I get the pipes cleaned up but I replaced the screws on both sides with stainless Allen heads and new stainless washers.

Re: 1978 GL1000 My 1st GL
Upon further inspection this tank may not make the cut. On the opposite side from the drain hole there were some pits in the metal and the paint was peeling off. after scrubbing it with some scotch bright and shaking the tank around with some bolts inside of it to break loose some of the rust, those pits are rust holes. I saw light through them probed around a bit and there is not much metal left in that area. Think I'll add another tank to my list of parts needed.
