Oldewing gets a new chance

#1

Post by Oldewing »

Time to refresh my 1982 GL1100 Interstate, AKA Oldewing.

After riding her since 2001 it's time to update her, bought it from a guy in North Carolina and rode her ever since. Along the way, I have had very little trouble with it. Did NGW runs all over with it. Logged over 140 K till she lost on compression on number 2. Did a valve job, but no joy. My guess with out seeing is a piston ring gave up.

It also have some frame rust issues, leading me to find another frame and engine well I was at it. Plan is swap all the other stuff over, after rebuilding and cleaning what is needed.

Don't plan on putting the fairing back on, but will keep the bags, less the top box. Windshield of some sort will be mounted along with new LED headlamp and turn thingys..

Already have progressive spring and shocks along with 83 cast rim's on it. Brake lines are SS also. New seat is here too.

Speaking of Deadwood, I asked your thoughts about the flat spot I was experiencing around 6000 Rpm on the orange 1100 (Dragon Wing) and you suggested checking the vacuum advance. Well, it turned out the vacuum hose from number 3 carb just dropped down over the side of the engine while a separate vacuum hose attached to the advance unit itself was routed down the back of the engine along side the drain hose! I suppose it has been that way since I first assembled it five years ago and while I have noticed a bit of hesitation on hard acceleration, it just wasn't that noticeable until we got in the mountains! So, thanks for the tip!
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
