76 LTD Restoration

#1

Post by JohnnyNumbers »

I just got back from Colorado today after picking up my new to me 76 LTD. The month of October just seemed to drag on and on! I figured I start the thread with a few pictures of the bike at it's new home. I'll post pictures as things progress.

Man, I wish I hadn't seen that sidestand down. Normally, it's not a good idea to transport with a stand down. There's no cushion/suspension working for you. In extreme cases, the frame can be damaged. Hope the roads back from Colorado were nice and smooth!

With that said, I will add that your specimen is as nice an LTD as I've seen. Looks like you got everything...except maybe the leather keyfob? Nice score, John. Shouldn't take much to get that one ship shape!

Very nice score there and not much of a restoration required from the pics. More of a refresh around your mechanical to do stuff if it has sat for awhile. Never find them that nice up here, other than one about 5 years ago in number #1 condition and at a selling price to match.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

I'm not sure why I strapped it down with the kickstand down, I haven't in the past. Anyway the roads were pretty decent, no serious potholes, so I think the bike is fine.

curious who you got the LYD from, I know of two people in CO who had LTD's. Nice looking bike

as long as we are talking about how to tie down. I always tie off the swing arm near the rear axle for the rear tie down. The rear will always bounce up and down off the shocks and you cannot tighten out that spring, but the swing arm is stable compared to the deck as all you have with any springiness is the tire.

I think restoration is a little strong, as mentioned previously it's more of a refresh. I'm going to replace the timing belts and just about any other item made of rubber. Go through the brake systems, change all the fluids, clean the carbs and tank. Other than that I plan on riding it just the way it is.

I bought the bike from my cousin Charlie in Denver. I've been working him over for about 4 years. My persistence finally paid off! :-D

Wow! And I've had the pleasure of meeting both you rascals! If you'll tolerate a non-LTD GL1000 in the mix, I'd love to join!

Is your cousin still alive? Hard to imagine he would willingly let that bike go. Lucky you.
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process :IDTS:
