New Project 1978 Gl1000 "Trickster"

#1

Post by Jonesz »

There are two sayings that come to mind with this one"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and "Hope springs eternal".Thought I would post a pic of the bike that I have waiting for me to pick up some 250 miles away after the weather smartens up somewhat. This will officially start a rebuild thread on the bike called "Trickster" a term for the raven who according to Northwest Indian Tribes is a transformer. I am hoping that she will evolve from a 78 with fairing, bags etc into a very nice naked cafe style bike. Time will tell.
The Good:
-a set of plastics that appear to be in nice condition and another repainted set.
-a seat, grab rail and radiator shrouds that have no apparent wear according to the seller.
-all parts are there excluding headlight and mounting ears and turnsignals front & rear.
-It has a key!!
The Bad
-Bike has set for 16 years in a shed and is covered with dirt and grime.
-Belts, tires and battery will be toast.
-Engine may be seized?? fuel tank will be full of rust.
-Brakes will need serious work.
-Carbs look to be off an 1100.
Wish I didn't start this list as it brings to mind another old saying "There is no fool like an old fool". I think it will be fun.
Attached are some of the pics fro the seller just to establish the starting point. There will be no updates till she gets home and has some pieces removed.
Thanks CrazyJerry for inspiring this project. If you are ever in my neck of the woods please come see us. My WIFE would like a word with you!!

Looks like most of the unobtainium parts are there. How is the exhaust?

Looks all there. The 1100 carbs were a common add in the day. Easier to work on and less temperamental.

Agreed. Excellent opening! Depending on just how radical your café job is, those the skins with the ghost flames might be just the ticket!

Hope you can gently turn it over with a wrench, to determine is she's seized. Good luck with her.

Hi All
Pidjones- don't know the exact condition of the exhaust but the seller says it can be cleaned up and quite usable.
SunnBobb- the carbs may be the same as I put on my previous 78 MANY years ago and as you say a common change up. Not worried about this too much.
Desertrefuge & RCmatt007- I am afraid that the "ghost flames" will be long gone but am looking forward to repainting these panels!
77Gowing- Will certainly take it cool turning over the old lady, going to try turn it over with a wrench before anything else is done. Then new belts, a carb clean and a transfusion bottle to get her running if possible. I have a buddy who just bought an ultrasound cleaner that wants to be tried out.

It has been too cold here to go get my new project and I haven't seen her in person but bought her a welcome home gift. Haven't seen it either but my brother in law in Calgary picked it up from the seller. He says it is in excellent condition and it was WAAAAAAY cheaper that a new one. Couldn't resist as I think Corbin gunfighters look pretty good on a 78. Hope the bike runs!!

Yes and I know that a hundred other things need addressed before I need a new seat but didn't want to miss out on it.

So went and picked up the 78 yesterday. Many many things need to be fixed/upgraded but was happy to see that the black/gold body panels looked virtually new. Spent this aft removing the fairing and hardbag system. Then my buddy Ian showed up and we were able to get the "seized engine" turning over using persuasion (1/2 inch x 20 breaker bar on the front engine bolt ) and the only light oil we had on hand which was some air tool lubricant. The puked out juice was extremely foul but at least it eased our concern that the engine might have interior damage. The timing belts upon inspection were intact but will be replaced before the initial fire up. The gas tank must be cleaned and the carbs done too. Drained the antifreeze and removed the rad. Will replace the rad hoses. Cleaned the OEM seat after 17 years of crud and some white paint spots(turned out very nice) and washed and polished the plastic body parts (look like new). As stated before there are a hundred other things to do but had a good Sunday Aft. Also ordered new timing belts.
