I guess I was fibbing a bit about the 'last of the long story, lol...
When we began this project, Josh and I agreed that we would split the expenses, and keep any modifications to a minimum, at least until the bike was roadworthy. Storm clouds began brewing nearly from the start, as a couple of unexpected household expenses postponed any major expenditures on my part, and Josh, well, was being Josh. He was on a downhill slide, started skipping work, complained that our 'house rules' were too strict, yada, yada, yada. He'd disappear for a few days with no contact, then come home and be all apologetic, want to do something on the bike, then get bored or frustrated and start complaining again. We'd seen this cycle many times in the past, and knew it was likely to get worse before it got better.
I can't put into words what it's like watching someone you care about engaging in such self-destructive behaviors that you're never sure if you'll see them alive again. It's even worse when they ask for help, then don't heed your advice or appreciate your assistance. All you can do is hope for the best, expect the worst, and try to put the pieces back together when the bottom falls out...

I dragged my feet quite a lot through the month of July, mostly out of frustration at Josh's behavior. We had several discussions about it, but he just couldn't pull it back together. When a friend offered him a room rent free, Josh (kinda) moved out. With no-one to rien him in, he soon went off the deep end.
I finally decided to move forward, hoping that dangling the carrot of a running bike would give him some hope. As the carbs were the first major hurdle, I dug in...

Overall, the carbs were in pretty good shape; they looked almost newly rebuilt.

The slides and jets, however, needed some serious attention.

After the usual spraying, poking, prodding, polishing, and tons of blow drying, they looked pretty good! I didn't polish anything, as Josh didn't want anything 'shiny.' I managed to restrain myself... lolol lolol lolol

While I really wanted Josh to be involved in rebuilding the carbs, he and I both knew he wasn't in the right mental state to tackle the job. I did get him to help a bit with the cleaning, and he did show up for the installation and first firing ceremony. I took a video of his first (short) ride, but I can't seem to find it. Suffice it to say that his reaction was great to see. Maybe the 'carrot' would work after all...

I/we spent the first two weeks of August trying to tune and sort out lingering carb issues. Josh just wanted to ride, but the bike still needed tires, and he wasn't making any monetary contributions, so I flat out refused. That didn't sit well with him, and when a spark plug cap pulled loose from the wire while he was pulling and cleaning the plugs for the umpteenth time, he just blew up. He hadn't come right out and said it, but he felt I was just using him to get the bike, and he'd never get to ride it, or 'make it his own.'

August 21st, Scarlett finally got her new tires. Josh was more than happy to do the majority of the labor, so of course he got the first ride!

We continued to have carb issues, as well as seemingly low compression numbers across all four cylinders.
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=65942
I pulled the carbs and did whiskerfish's shop vac test and found the slides were very sticky. I also discovered at some point that the air filter that had been in the bike was from a 1200, and didn't fit properly in the housing. The older Dyna ignition and stock coils were swapped out for a new Dyna set-up as well as Dyna coils and wires, as the old wires were in poor shape, and one coil was beginning to crack.

Sunday, Sept. 2nd. Even though it had been misting/raining on and off all day, Josh and I were determined to get in our first real ride. The radar looked pretty good, so off we went, with Josh in the lead...
Within the first mile, Josh pulled off, and I could see on his face that he was getting mad quick. He hopped off the bike, throwing his gloves at it in a rage. It idled fine, but would hardly rev over 3k. While I tried to get him to take a few deep breaths and calm down, I took a quick look at the carbs, then gave the throttle a blip. Ha! In our haste to get the carbs reinstalled, we had forgotten to adjust the cables!
It was a memorable ride, to say the least. First, don't ask me to predict the weather! The temperature dropped like a rock, and radar isn't very good at indicating 'light' rain that still soaks you to the skin. Second, when we switched bikes and I finally got to ride Scarlett, she wouldn't start, not even a click, yet the headlight had juice (I'm going to have to look at those diodes one of these days, lol). Third, a forty-plus year old headlight that looks fine in the daylight doesn't necessarily cut it on a dreary, rainy, cold September evening!

You might notice that Josh did get to add his own personal touch. After listening for him complain about it being 'too quiet,' I dug out a pair of Harley mufflers and '78 headers intended for my '78 project and let him go to town. (I stashed the stock mufflers in my nice, dry, basement, lol!)

I'd like to say this has a nice happy ending, but there's always something left hanging. Scarlett runs pretty darn good, but could run better, and there's lots of little things left to do.
As for Josh, well, he's working at it. He moved back in with us last fall, and has pretty much kept his nose clean. His past run - ins with the law finally caught up with him, and he'll be sitting for a few months instead of a slap on the wrist. But, it could have been worse. At least he's still with us!

You need to prepare yourself for him coming home in worse shape then when he went in.
He will be surrounded by career criminals and the "peer" pressure inside is immense.
It may be just the thing to convince him to turn his life around..but it could have the opposite effect.
In 20 years as a Correctional Officer I've seen many young men like Josh go thru the system and the majority leave in worse shape then when they arrived.

Thank you very much for your insight. This is actually his fourth (and longest by far) stint in jail, and I absolutely agree with what you're saying. We went through that in a big way after his second stay. Thankfully it's all been in county lockup. He has work release privileges and a pretty decent job, and a girlfriend who he's pretty serious about. I will say his demeanor and attitude are totally different (in a good way) than in the past. Only time will tell, but the signs are good, and we're hopeful.

On a side note, I can't imagine being a corrections officer for 20 days, much less 20 years. A very tough job. Thank you for your service.

Thanks for reading it, lol! I have to say, the 'project' was/is Josh, me, and our relationship; Scarlett is just the medium we're using to work through it. Just like working on a bike, there are pitfalls, trials and errors, great moments, and frustrations. And it's ever evolving, never really 'done.'
