The wheels got a bath and a good scrubbing with plain old Dawn dish soap and water. I had to use a toothbrush to get the insides of the 'spokes.' They turned out pretty good. You wouldn't believe how dirty the water was! Of course, then I had to clean the bathtub...

I also got the tires mounted. I'm getting a bit better at that job; they went on without too much of a struggle, and I only had one bead that didn't seat right away. I really should invest in a tire changer...

Today's (Sunday's) plan is to install the wheel bearings/seals and brake rotors, then pack up all the goodies and tools, and head out to the storage unit. It's supposed to be relatively warm today (low 40's), so hopefully I can take advantage and start putting this Lady back together!

Ready to rock and roll! Somehow I forgot to install the internal spacer between the rear bearings... I had just started tapping in the second bearing when I realized it. Ugh! Luckily the bearing popped right out. No harm, no foul!

Once the wheels/ tires were done, I started collecting tools to take to the storage unit. That's when I realized I wasn't quite done removing parts. I have a new thermostat, hoses, and, of course, the timing belts sitting in a box, so off came the radiator and related parts...

Looks almost like new inside! You can probably see the Honda logos on the belts...

The last of the major parts coming off were the carbs. They were obviously leaking when I bought the bike, but I didn't realize just how bad they were. I don't think I'll be getting those fuel stains out, so I'll just have to live with 'em for a while. GRRR!

I'm really bumming... two pretty good snow events and a forecast for lows in the teens/ highs in the lower twenties for the next ten days has just about done in any hope of actually riding this bike before winter. I'm thinking I'm just going to assemble what I can/ need to make it a roller, then tuck it away 'til spring. It's kind of disheartening because I'm so close, but maybe a break from worrying about it will do me good. I've got plenty of other stuff to keep me busy for the winter, and it will be one less bike to fuss over for a while...

Well, at least she's on her own two wheels!
The pics don't show it much, but every nook and cranny that's normally covered by bodywork or other assemblies is just plain grimy. The fuel tank, which I thought was in pretty good condition, needs to come out for a thorough flushing as well. All of which would be no big deal except it really can't happen in a storage unit in Wisconsin during winter! GRRR!

I looked at the calendar this morning, and realized February is half over! action1 action1 action1 Getting the engine together on The Jalopy project has really given me 'the itch,' so I thought I'd go back and review where I'm at on Layla. I have several containers tucked away full of all the little odds and ends that still need attending to, and I certainly didn't realize just how many little things I should/could be working on. I think The Jalopy is going to take a back seat for a while!

Goal: Debut at the "Slimey Crud Run" on Sunday, May 3rd.
Countdown: 78 days...

The 'To Do' list:
Finish polishing the timing belt and rocker covers.
Polish the new - to - me fork brace.
Clean and prep radiator and fan.
Clean and prep misc. small parts and fasteners.
Do a final vacuum check and set the air mixture screws on the carbs.

**Decide if I'm going to move the bike home to finish the final assembly work**

Remove fuel tank, clean and seal.
Rebuild petcock.
Do a final 'deep clean' while the fuel tank is out.
Check/ clean all electrical connections.
Reinstall fuel tank.
Reinstall rear wheel/ tire, inner fender, shocks and air lines, complete rear brake system, and bleed.
Install front brake system and bleed.
Replace the timing belts and set valve clearances.
Replace coolant cross pipe o-rings and elbow gaskets.
Replace shifter shaft and tach drive seals.
Check/ lube all cables.
Install carbs/ air filter assembly and replace all fuel lines.
Install radiator assembly and replace hoses.
Add coolant and change oil.
Install new battery.
**FIRST START**
Adjust and sync carbs as needed.
Install all bodywork and seat.
Do a final check list.

*** ENJOY THE RIDE! ***

Countdown: 71 days

Spent yesterday and today (Sunday) sorting through some parts and found the radiator that I had repainted and stashed a couple of years ago, so that's one less item that will need attention. I also worked some on the belt and rocker covers. Slow going as I'm trying to survive a nasty cold that just won't let go...

Countdown: Day 65-64

It's been kind of a low energy weekend, with my time split on several projects. I did get a few pieces prepped for painting when the weather will (finally) allow, and washed up the air box and rear inner fender. One nice thing about plastic stuff, if it isn't broken, it cleans up pretty good, lol!

One important point is not breaking the oxidized plastic part during cleaning. If you avoid that, perhaps buy a lottery ticket.

Ready for the buffing wheel!
Unfortunately I've run into a snag. My mother was diagnosed with cancer and required surgery. While the prognosis is quite good (they caught it very early), my sisters and I are spending as much time with her as possible while she recovers. She's going to be 81 this year, so it's going to be a slow process. My partner Robin is staying with her during the week, so I'm in charge of tending to the animals and trying to keep the house in order. lolol
