Polishing smooth aluminum parts is so rewarding. Rough cast pot metal (like carb bodies) not so much. Soon, all of these details will be complete and you will be surprised at how fast it goes together.

After a slow start, today was fairly productive. The brake components got their final clean-up and three coats of caliper paint, while Josh learned how to soda blast, cleaning up the heads and valves for his engine. Tomorrow I hope to get the forks assembled, then start cleaning up the rims and get ready to drill the rotors. The last things to come off the bike will be the radiator, carbs, and coolant crossover tubes, then it will be clean, clean, clean, change the belts, adjust the valves, and start the assembly process!

Some notable progress this weekend... I was waffling about replacing the wheel bearings and drilling the rotors, but I'm already way behind 'schedule' so taking the time to do it right just makes sense to me. Hopefully I can knock out drilling the rotors during the week...

Progress is progress. Most important is to take your time and do it the way you want. You will always regret taking shortcuts after the fact. You have done some very nice work, looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks for the encouragement, Liam. I've just been kicked all over the place by 'must do' projects for the last month or more, then can't get up the gumption to do much when I can find the time. I think part of it is just seeing these parts and pieces laying around at home, while the bike itself is tucked away in storage. I think I need to 'commune' more and build a better connection with the bike... I know, I'm kinda weird, lolol lolol lolol

Glossy black brake components waiting for final assembly...

I'm moving along, one small task at a time. New brake lines arrived Friday, and I've got the battery bookmarked to purchase just before I'll be ready to use it. I went through the box of bits and pieces I've been stockpiling, and I think I've got everything covered that definitely needs replacing. I still haven't finished polishing the spare rocker and timing belt covers, but those are relatively easy to swap out later. I'm trying to keep from getting bogged down on stuff like that; it has just sapped the gumption right out of me lately.

Chipping away, part by part... I plan on setting up the drill press and get the rotors knocked out after work during the week. Unfortunately, I have a family function that will take up the entire upcoming weekend, and a few hanging projects, but that list is getting smaller, as well. I am DETERMINED to ride this lady BEFORE winter sets in!

Chipping away!
20191022_181337.jpg
96 holes drilled and chamfered...
20191031_173739.jpg
I also cleaned up most of the related hardware that I had brought home from the storage unit, but there's still some odds and ends I'll have to collect when I go through town.
I still need to clean the wheels. They don't look bad in pictures, but they've got that 'dull' dusty look from years of road grime that's a PITA to clean up. Any suggestions would be wonderful! Once I get the wheels cleaned up, it's on to the tires and wheel bearings, then, finally, starting to put the bike back together!

The weather is depressing! We got better than two inches of snow Monday night (which mostly melted), then three plus inches last night and this morning. To make matters worse, the ten day forecast is calling for lows in the teens and highs in the mid twenties. To top that off, I'm also fighting a cold. BRRR and GRRR!

Wheel bearings need an update with each set of tires. While your last tires were not worn out, no telling if those bearings were OEM so best to start fresh and then stick to changing them on each tire change. Great progress, Layla is coming along fine.

Thanks for the encouragement, Fred. Wheel bearings are on the list (but I don't change them out at every tire change)...
