78 GL1000 restoration started

Post by Wirelic »

Hello,

I received a 78 Wing that hasn’t been run in 3 years and has numerous issues. Some are: gas tank is full of rust, front & rear brake systems are both seized, carbs are gunned up, some electrical issues and for the most part, it’s all over 41 years old and is deteriorated, rusted and tired.

In the photos, I have the rear trunk removed, but it does have a Vetter fairing, hard bags and trunk.

So far, I’ve removed the luggage, rear wheel, shocks, caliper, master cylinder, fender, inner fender, battery box, petcock, fuel filter and rear drive. After wrestling with the gas tank for 30 minutes or so, I got it free. During that process, I found the electrical connector between the stator and the rest of the bike to be burned thru. Just one more thing to deal with.

I have Randakk’s carb rebuilt kit & video, rebuild kits for the master cylinders and more parts coming. I’ll try to post as the project progresses. I’d like to have it completed by next spring.

Love the blue 78's, Yellow plug burn is a common thing. Just hard wire it, the three wires don't care who dances with who either.

There is a test for the stator. Do it after the repair to make sure the melted connector did not let two of the phases short and take out the stator.

Yep, the blue '78's are one of my favorites! As far as your to-do list goes, it matches nearly every wing I've owned or even looked at! lolol lolol lolol For your sake, I hope it doesn't get too much longer. Next spring sounds like a good target date, as well...
