Re: The 70's called and I answered. 1975 GL1000 project
Latest 'wing news:
- Changed up the oil finally (I bought it with fresh oil) and pleased by what an easy process it was. So nice to have a wet sump system for changing oil, vs my old CB750 which always made a mess. Put in some Motul 10/40 and decided to go for a ride when...
- Rear tire was flat. It had a slow leak, so I'm thinking my patched tube gave up. Picked up a Michelin tube the next day and finally was able to swap a tube without pinching it. These 'wing rims are really tough to a) not damage, and b) not pinch a tube. Getting the hang of it...
I also checked out my rear wheel spline condition. Pleased to report they look new, and were lubed. I know all about spline lube and moly etc from owning an airhead years ago, so I do intend to fully disassembly and re-lube the various splined joints on the shaft in the next couple weeks.
- Just today I had my Kijiji (Canadian Craig's List) score of the season. I bought a gorgeous set of Hondaline racks for $100!! Earlier I had bought the three Hondaline bags with the rack, but turned out I had boght the rack for a cb750 and they don't work on the wings. So I am so chuffed. They're being mailed here and should have them in about 10 days. Full touring setup is in the works...
- Last item I'm chasing is a clutch issue. When I start from a stop, and the clutch is slipping, everything is smooth till I'm right at the end of the lever travel... Then the bike jumps forward and I feel the clutch grab with a clunk once full engaged. I've had the same issue with other Honda CB/wet clutches. It could be old worn out clutch plates, notched basket, etc. So some investigation is needed.

Nice progress!
Just an FYI, it's quite possible that the 'clunk' you hear on takeoff is related to the output shaft, which is spring loaded. Several people here have chased their tails, going through everything from the clutch, u-joint, prop shaft, final drive, drive flange, and wheel cushions to no avail. The general consensus seems to be that some bikes have it and some don't. I'm not saying that there are not other issues, but it's something to keep in mind.

Re: The 70's called and I answered. 1975 GL1000 project
Oh interesting, I've looked at photos of that and wondered about it actually. Reason I'm suspecting clutch is because it's easily reproduced with specific clutch input. But who knows???
Today I decided what the heck, rear wheel is off, maybe as well disassemble my rear end and inspect the splines and swing arm pivots.
The splines between the final drive and the swing arm all looked new. They were packed with some kind of really gooey black grease which stuck to everything, including me. I don't think it's a moly paste, and it was certainly WAY over applied. The whole swingarm was packed full of it. I spent most of my time cleaning the grease OFF!
I removed the circlip behind the rubber boot (that was fun...) and removed the swing arm. The splines at the engine looked great, though they were dry. So good news that I have healthy splines, just need to source and apply the appropriate spline lube.
My u-joint has just the tiniest amount of perceptible play. However the manual says the acceptable play is zero. Nadda. So that's not great... There is definitely not enough to be the source of my clunk. Plus I don't feel any clunk when rolling on/off the throttle. So I'm filing this under 'find a replacement and schedule the job for winter'.
Swing arm bearings looked rusty and were a but crunchy. I flushed the needle bearings out, cleaned them till my towel stopped coming out rusty red, then pumped fresh grease in. Same deal with the pivots. The swingarm pivot shaft is an interesting design on the wing! Took me a minute to understand the process of setting the preload properly, but I think I've got it.
So that concludes the rear-end rebuild for the evening. Thunderstorm is rolling over the shop, temperature is cooling off, just got an email saying my Hondaline racks are shipping, life is good.

Re: The 70's called and I answered. 1975 GL1000 project
Hondaline racks arrived and I spent a few hours fitting them to the Wing yesterday.
First up, it looks like the seller wasn't exactly accurate with the description. These aren't from a GL1000, at least not a 75-77. I'm pretty sure they're made for a GL1100. I spent some time hunting around online and it seems to me like there are a ton of variations of these Hondaline racks. Different horizontal brackets behind the rear wheel (or none at all for that matter), rear rack styles, backrest styles, lock and latch styles, etc. So anyway, this all meant I had to do some modifications.
The racks came with the twin lock/latch design, which wasn't compatible with the bags I have. Thankfully I have a set of cb750 Hondaline racks with the single/integrated lock and latch. I had to fabricate some simple brackets to get them to mate to the new rack, which I did out of 1/8" steel plate.
Next I fit the racks to the bike. The racks lined up at the passenger foot peg bolt, upper shock mount bolt, but the third mounting point (near where turn signals mount to the standard grab rail) doesn't line up. I don't think this is a big deal. I'm going to tie the two together with a home-made short steel bracket to add some rigidity. The rear horizontal stay passes through the tail light just fine.
The whole thing takes a few hours as I needed to drill a 1" hole in the steel for each latch, and couldn't' find my bi-metal hole saw arbor. Once taken care of, it was pretty painless.
I noticed that this rack style has the bags tilted forward a little bit, much like how BMW airheads have the Krauser bags mounted. Most of the Hondaline setups on Goldwings I've seen have the bags dead flat. I don't think this looks bad or wrong, just making an observation. Actually looks quite nice as the angle matches the upward sweet of my exhaust!
My top case is not sitting quite right in these photos. Oddly it can't actually lay 100% flat against the rack as is, but I think I can modify the rear latch to make it fit better. These cases are old and brittle and I want to have as much support under them as possible.

Here's a few more photos showing the existing latches, and the mount that doesn't line up and requires a bracket

Bags look great .... if it was me I would only fit the trunk for longer trips .... just like the look better without it .... can’t see it when you’re riding tho ....

Re: The 70's called and I answered. 1975 GL1000 project
Fuel pump started leaking at the weep hole and it’s time to replace it.
I removed the pump and opened it up. It actually looks new at first glance! But close inspection shows some cracking in the diaphragm. Closer look again shows this isn’t made by Keihin, but kyosan denki. No clue who that is!
I have a spare Keihin pump but it’s very rough. It won’t pump fuel at first so I pull it apart. The rubber is poor and the check valves don’t work. I cleaned the valves and now it pumps, but doesn’t hold fuel back when the engine stops. So it’s a dud as well.
Time to look into an electric pump conversion, as new pumps are $150 CAD here.

I may try this myself on a spare that I have, but I fear that its valves are shot. BTW, don't use Viton for this - it is not as resilient as Nitrile (Buna N) or Neoprene and will fail much faster from the flexing.
