I'm going to try the JB Weld route, and see how it goes.

I will simultaneously try to un-stick the 1980 engine.

I'll make an actual decision about which one to use at a later date...

It has to be repaired even if you do not use it now. Cannot have a spare engine with a leak you know. Seems like a reasonable repair. My Dad stripped the spark plug on his Jacobson aluminum lawnmower 40 years back. It was new. He glued the plug in with expoxy. Used the mower for 20 years, occasionally removing the head to clean and gap the spark plug. It never leaked or got loose. Mowers were pretty low compression back then.
