Need bags

#1

Post by GWHayduke »

New to club, just bought a primo black with gold pinstripe 1978. I've always had Beemers (with bags) because the bikes are ridden daily for errands. I've been looking at Nelson Rigg, Saddlemen, etc. and all are functional, but none melt my butter.

Any suggestions on new or old, side or tail bags that will fit the '78 and not detract from the looks of a nice old GW?

I like the looks of the older califia (sp?) side bags. I've also seen Valkyrie bags adapted to the 1000's and they look great too...

Waaaaaaay back, I had Bates bags on my naked 78.
I thought that they looked pretty sharp and that it was one of the best looking Goldwings that I have owned.

Here's a pic, not the best shot, but it should give you an idea.

I probably have better pics of the bags, but I would have to go back to the era of 35mm. pictures and photo albums to find them.

Vetter bags were removable. There are plenty around used. I couldn't give them away for a long time, so gave the whole Vetter setup to a club member to sell @ Barber vintage weekend swap meet. Really I've found that jyst a nice luggage rack on the back is as functional.

I've got both Vetter and Bates. Vetters open from the side(sort of) but I prefer the lines of the Bates.

Whatever bags you decide on you will most certainly have to fabricate your own mounting system unless the bags you purchase have the mounts included in the deal.

I found Calafia and a different style Bates. I think either would look good on the bike after painting and restoration.thanks for the heads up. Also found a nice top case, but at exorbitant price. Thanks for the help!

I bought NOS CX500 bags off ebay. Not the bags with the "step" shape but more rounded. Haven't installed them yet but I like the mockup. I'll add a pic when I can.

why not gold wing bags? I picked up these interstate bags for $50 and cut off the trunk mount for the look I wanted. still need to replace the lid seals, but otherwise, I am very pleased.

plenty of capacity. I rode up to the local orchard and brought 4 gallons of fresh cider home with plenty of room to spare.
