Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
Does anyone have coil recommendations, I’d prefer the oem style so not dyna’s. I ordered one from saber cycle and the leads aren’t long enough without using the provided extensions which I’d rather not use... will try for testing though.
Condenser/ capacitor comes tomorrow so hopefully I’ll hear it cough to life this weekend.

Many use Neon coils from Fiat Chrysler. Or coils from later models from Honda. I personally love Dyna coils.

If you want stock, I'm sure 4into1 or Dime City has some repops, or you might even find NOS with DSS or Western Honda. Personally, I use the Dyna conversion kit with 5 ohm coils, no ballast resistor, and run the whole thing off a relay triggered by the kill switch. Works great.

Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
I may do the dyna once i confirm that this thing runs, just seems like an excessive amount of money for a bike that hasn't ran for me yet, I'll look into the dynas more. I assume the conversion isn't that difficult

Very easy. You do want to run 3ohm coils if you with Dyna coils and Dyna ignition.ejedmond wrote:I may do the dyna once i confirm that this thing runs, just seems like an excessive amount of money for a bike that hasn't ran for me yet, I'll look into the dynas more. Situation report...
It ran! Idled beautifully. Condenser was failed but ultimately not the issue. Checked the points over a bit better and had to take a little sand paper on that set after that fired right up. Btw ran it open header so still a long road ahead, nice fireballs though.

I’ve read a lot of advice about coils and ignitions and ohms etc. Lots of conflicting info.

Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
What did you do about the cracked coils? Honestly, if it were me I'd try using liquid electrical tape into the cracks after cleaning them well with isopropyl. The voltage isn't all that high, and a good liquid dielectric (maybe apply in layers to make sure it fully cures) should work and keep it dry. Finding good condensers and points these days is a crap shoot. That's one of the reasons I went with the Ford TFI modules on my '79 https://www.gl1800riders.com/threads/an ... st-5663553. So far so good, but weather for the past 3 or 4 months has had it parked and the 1800 seeing the road. If you would like to try the TFI thing, I have drawings and part lists somewhere....

Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
I'm going to run the coil I got from saber cycle as a replacement for the factory one, I may try and seal the crack one way or another but i don't know that I would ever trust it, ya know? I plan on having this bike out at sturgis this year and I would hate to get stuck some where.
Will start putting things back together now, will need to rebuild all the brakes before i can take it for a spin, but its a relief that it runs

If riding it far, I'd take a spare set of points and condenser pack.

We’re going to trailer out we like to bring a few obscurities with us. Last year my dad took a tuk tuk. This year we’ll probably bring a Vespa and a c70 passport.
Also eric that article on coils was great and I couldn’t agree more

Things coming back together so far not missing any screws, bought a replacement fuel level meter as mine had dissolved. Cleaning up fairly well a few scuffs in the paint. Doing the brakes now then will be ready for a test ride.
