Crazy weather today in Ontario
almost summer like
The bike runs out great
It was nice to put a few (illegal) miles on it
Gives me a chance to work a few more things out before I get it safe-tied and on the road legally
Took my other Japanese Toy out also.
The weather will change tomorrow and they both have to go back into hiding.

Some times extra time on your hands can be a good thing.
The bike started but I was not happy with how it turned over.
Pulled the battery out and noticed it was almost dry.
Filled with distilled water and reinstalled.
Checked voltage across posts wile running and yes it was over charging at 15.8 volts at 3000 rpm.
Did the search and saw the amount of discussion on this topic.
Did I ever mention that this forum is very helpful action1
First check was the plug connections to the regulator.
They looked a little corroded.
Cleaned them and the voltage is now at 14.5 at 3000 rpm.
Next on my list of virus social distancing exercises is cleaning and lubricating the rest of the contacts as a good way to prevent future issues.

Well I finally got this bike on the road legal.
Stood with safety check and various pieces of paper in line for about 2 hrs outside.
Worth it, The weather finally switched to summer.
The license office had been closed until now.

I've also seen that if I run the battery down (cranking for compression testing, setting timing, etc.), that the voltage will run as high as 17.1 V (on the digital voltmeter added on my '79) for up to three miles. Then it will drop to ~14.3 V.

Thanks

Good to know.
The battery is also weak and I am waiting for a replacement to show up.
I will test it again with a new AGM battery and see where it's at.
Amazon delivery has slowed up considerably.
Went for a 80 km drive this afternoon.
Surprisingly fast when you get up in the power band.

I just bought a 1976 GL1000 before the pandemic isolation started so it's been slow going but now I have new tires so it is rideable once more.

You have made a lot of progress during the winter.

Found that no matter how much I cleaned connections the bike would still charge over 15 volts.
I bought a Amazon solenoid switch and hooked the black wire from the voltage regulator to the positive battery post.
Worked like a dream.
Voltage at 3000 rpm 14.2 volts.

Casey, could you please explain the solenoid switch? It’s not your starter solenoid is it? Thanks Dave.

My Bad
I should have typed relay switch.
This a solution which has been talked about on this forum in a number of threads.
The relay is triggered when you turn on the ignition and the voltage regulator trigger wire is connected directly to the positive battery terminal.

This is the link to a great switch which has a fuse built in the circuit
