A few rags to protect paint and a pry bar on the front makes it easier after you drop the rear.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Thanks for the tips.
In addition to your teachings, I found, after attempting to remove the rectifier (the finned electric device?) with no luck, that the battery housing could be removed with two bolts and then I had plenty of room to pull the tank.

Great, when it's ready, I'll get my wife to push and of course, breathe. :-D
As a Lamaze coach/partner with a regrettable amount of experience in delivery rooms to my credit I snorted coffee through my nose when I read that. The wife came in to see why I was howling. Oddly, she didn't laugh...

There should also be a "cheater" in there that slips over the handle to give more leverage.

Happy New Year.

I managed to remove the frame from the engine and walk the engine up some planks onto a bench. Santa brought me a full set of gaskets including valve stem seals so that's where I'll start to put things back together.
When I removed the left side cam, I found this:

The rocker arms look fine.
How much of a problem is this?

That doesn't look good... you might be ok as, depending on the design, there might be a 'transition' area of the cam lobe that actually doesn't touch the rocker pad. Can't say for certain though...

No, that cam looks to be junk. I would be real suspicious of the rocker arm pad too.

Does the camshaft from a 1979 fit the 1975? I see some on ebay.

It will "fit" but there are differences. I think the 75-77 cams are the same. But do some checking. I believe ericheath has some info on that.

Fit but different profiles. You want a 75-77. They’re getting harder to come by as more people are putting them in 78-83 bikes for perceived performance gains. The breakers have gotten to think they’re gold. Be patient and you’ll find one cheap. Sometimes you’re better off looking at buying a complete head, then you have some spare parts to clutter up the garage. lol

Heads can be swapped side-to-side, but cam cannot, so you need a left cam.
