I've done several carb racks with PineSol and they've come out great. Mind you, they typically didn't start out so bad either. But with a little scrubbing those should clean up nicely.

Hey Rodger I was wondering about these as well. My 78 gauges are going to need a going over this winter and I noticed that there is some sun/age/rot on the cushions which I would like to replace at the same time. Are you saying that the 80 Gl1100 rubbers are a drop in or do they have to be trimmed or cut? Should hopefully solve my dilemma and maybe the OP's as well.

Hey Y'all
I'm slowly chipping away at dismantling these carbs; every piece a small victory. I've barely broken anything :-D .

The kidney shapes plates that cover the air jets are just not budging. The plate, gasket, and carb body seem to have become one. I have repeatedly sprayed with carb cleaner followed by PPB and pulled them with a hooked pick through the screw hole to no avail. I've been at it for days.
Any tips or strategies for removing those plates?

Also, any tips on removing stubborn float valve seats. They have been receiving the same spray treatments, but only very, very gentle grip with needle nose pliers. I would like to re-use them.

As always, any experience you are willing to share is welcomed and appreciated.

Hey Y'all,
I have been unable to remove the kidney shape plates.

I've tried a multitude of chemicals and even a bit of heat to no avail. I bought the Randaak video with my rebuild kit and I just have to shake my head when he reaches down with a pair of tweezers and lifts the plate away.
In a word, they are stuck.

All the passages seem to blow through except for these two on each carb:

Are these two passages directly linked to the air jets beneath the kidney shape plates?

If anyone is willing to share any tips, advice, or experience I would be grateful.

Seems I've gone from the kiddie pool to the deep end.

There's a paper gasket under those plates, so they can get stuck in place. With things like that I typically find a relatively long, slightly smaller bolt (tube, rod, etc.) that I can just catch the bottom lip of the piece and lever it out. It may take a few tries from different directions.

Great tip; the PineSol works great. I was wondering; is it safe to soak the piston slides, piston caps and needles in PineSol also?

I would try working a scalpel point around the edge of the plate to make sure no corrosion is holding it in place. It is steel, so not easy to break, but possible to bend.

Finally got around to installing a battery. What a thrill to hear Donna turn over for the first time in 33 years.

Great! I hope you took the tape off the intakes for the trial turn-over. It CAN suck them in! Hope the carb work is going well! We had a great vacation on OINC, and it was an added treat to meet you and Donna!
