I'm considering buying Gates T-274 timing belts; they are under half the price of KL's.
You folks got any experience with Gates?

Gates T-274 @ Amazon $15.87 each, free shipping if Prime member. Honda doesn't make belts, probably has Gates put their markings on them.

I've used Gates for years. never a problem
1978 custom GL1000
1977 custom with 1200 engine

I'm having trouble successfully compressing the valve springs, any tips?

The compressor you posted looks much like the one in the manual and will do the job. You can also buy similar c- clamp style compressors at just about any auto parts store, and most likely 'rent' one at O'Reilly's.
