I've used one like in your first photo several times. Put the "hooks" as deep in as you can get them and sometimes I use a pair of slip-joint pliers to press them into the spring tighter, but they worked.

Yeah, heads off use a c-clamp style. Much easier.

I used a wrench and a c-clamp to remove the first valve. I'll make a "pad" with a little more thickness to replace and remove the remaining valves. It is my intention to clean the valves, lap the valve seats and replace the oil seals.

Should precautions be made to avoid the valves moving locations? (If not, I'll soak them together)

action1 action1 action1 I typically try to keep the valves in the same locations just because each has developed it's own wear pattern.

Clever use of the wrench. Have you tried reinstalling the valve keepers? Looks like it may be delicate, but doable. I ended up cutting a slot in the pad of the clamp.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Nah, I didn't try reinstalling; there's not much room in there. I had left my angle grinder on the job and was just piddling in the shop area when I tried the wrench thing. I picked that clamp specifically for its wide pad area so I can remove the center and still be stable on the "spring cap". I'll either make a c- shaped wooden pad or grind the clamp.

Guess you can always stack some wrenches on top of each other to get your “gap” bigger.

I decided to grind the c-clamp and it works really well. I was able to refurbish the valves on the left head today.
I did manage to chew up one valve stem seal after neglecting to install the bottom spring retainer before the seal went on...oops. $2 part, $10 shipping :IDTS:

Overall a good day.

I received a "new" cam and I can't figure out how to remove the timing mechanism from the old one. Got any tips?

^^^^^ Seems like if...
I took the moving parts off to protect the little rubber pads and super thin "disk" then heated it up if may just slip off?

It should just slip off. Maybe heat it a little. It's keyed on, but just slides on the camshaft. I had to spray mine with PBBlaster and grip with rubber gloves. GENTLE prying might be Ok.

Maybe one of these?

My local TSC sells a good solution that I use in my tank. Five gallon can. Smell isn't bad. I can stand over it cleaning parts and it's not bad at all. Kerosene will have an odor even if the lid is closed. Paint thinner is too flammable IMO. Water based cleaners work but some people talk about the potential for rust.

Don't ask me the price on the TSC stuff. It's been several years since I bought some. Probably due for a change out though.
