In your first post in this thread you said you were a novice mechanic. You have made a lot of progress and some of us other novice mechanics are learning stuff as you work through things. Great work keep it up.

Looking closer, it looks like the end has just the remainder of threads... a transmission cover/lower radiator hose housing bolt?

I continue to gain experience. Like, I now know how much force it takes to shear a cam holder bolt. :-D
I knew something was off when all the other bolts required the same amount of turns to attain torque spec but the wrench just wouldn't click on that one. I kept going back trying to get that "click". Rookie mistake. I did manage to remove the bolt with a brand new set of left handed drill bits; backed right out.

Thanks to all who share here.

If you are using a Harbor Freight click-type torque wrench, make sure you aren't going 5 ft lbs over. When the adjustment handle first hits the spring, that is 5 ft lbs already.

Sure doesn't look like the other pictures I see on NGW :-D

The whole time I've been tinkering around I've been thinking maybe I can get away with not painting anything. But after seeing her with her covers on I know I've got to take the time to paint and polish.

Everything behind the rear cover has been cleaned and inspected and ready to go back in after I paint the rear cover.

I'm hesitant to remove the front cover; too many JIS screws. The water pump impeller has just a little free play rotationally.

I've got a few questions:

Would it be foolish to Not remove the front cover and I guess replace the pump?

I'd like to rattle can some Duplicolor engine paint, can that go right over the cleaned existing paint?

And for polishing, do you think a 6" bench buffer (HF) is sufficient?

As always, grateful for any reply.

Just my opinion, but it's much easier to get those JIS screws out when the engine is out of the frame... For what it's worth, every Wing I've owned or worked on (eight or nine?) either had a new water pump installed previously, or done by me. You can buy a rebuild kit for about $30 and save some money. I've just rebuilt two, and it's fairly easy. Neither bike has hit the road yet, so no long term review, but others here have done it.

May make sense to get new screws for the front cover from Robin, they are high quality and will make getting them off easier if it every has to happen again.

It is just so much easier to get at those front screws with the engine on the bench. With the engine in the bike there is a frame cross member partially blocking access to some of them making it almost impossible to get a screwdriver straight on. The bolt kit from Robin is the way to go for future work.
That water pump is one of the weak spots of all GL engines. If you go to the wingovations site old fogey has excellent tutorials there explaining the ins and outs of those water pumps. There is a little more to them than you may think. He also explains how to refurbish them. He sells the repair kits too.

Thanks. I want to replace all the JIS screws possible.

Because the only JIS screws I remember, are the ones I've mangled.
