Amazon and UPS delivered two days early, so I took advantage of the great painting weather and laid down the clear coat on the project bike's panels. Looks pretty good but now I can't touch them for a couple hours. Hopeful to mount them up Saturday!

Small setback today. Mounted the left radiator scoop, but when I went to mount the right I discovered that a brake fluid weep from the master banjo had run down and of course spoiled the frame paint beneath it. After retightening the banjo, wiping the area down thoroughly with 91% isopropyl alcohol (I've found it to be a good solvent for brake fluid), sanding lightly and wiping down again I masked the area off, wiped once more (and rechecked the banjo) and resprayed with two coats of Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy. This paint is obviously not brake fluid proof, although the Duplicolor Etching Primer apparently is! So, didn't have time to do any wet sanding yet. Might try some this evening. Just a little orange peel on the shelter sides and one side cover. Then add hardware, mount, and add badges.

BTW, I had a call today from a gentleman wanting to sell an '84 GL1200. Don't know if it was Aspencade or Interstate (not a standard). I was not interested but promised to pass it along. The bike will need exhaust work, but has been stored indoors.

Johnny 5 is pretty well finished up. Paint is actually two-tone (subtle difference, stands out as you move and light changes). Not my best, but the starter clutch finally started working reliably. Hope there are some days this week to stretch her legs!

Paint looks good. Did you prime the panels or just put the color coat over them after they were sanded? Getting to that stage on my 78 and was wondering what to do.

That project got done in a very short time. It looks a lot different from the first picture. I really like that colour. I dont think I have the skill to apply it, though.

Duplicolor etching primer except the areas that got high-build primer, and then etching primer before color coats. All primer rattle-can. Two coats 4:1 black:gold Duplicolor Paint Shop with 1.6 nozzle in normal size HVLP, the masked off for 3:2 black:gold shot with a touch-up gun through 0.6 nozzle. 1.6 is too big and I had to move very fast, but 0.6 way too small and had lots of orange peel. Spraymax Glamor Clear for clear coat (rattle can). You can't wet sand metalic color coats but the clear levels it well. Only 2 coats clear. If I was to do it over, I'd probably use another can and do 4.

Thanks for the very detailed explanation of your progress. It came out quite nice and I will follow your instructions on the 4 coats of clear coat and the priming process. No hurry at this end and the bike is to be a keeper so trying to get it as nice as my limited talents allow!
Was just about to prime the rad shrouds but will wait till I am able to get some self etching primer as they have been taken down to bare metal in quite a few spots.

Today, I rode the GL1800 to church to pick up communion kits for my family and two neighbor families. On the way home I rode over Norris Dam so, fulfilled my duties to Homeland Security. Put the 1800 up and got Johnny 5 out. Warmed it up (I sure like the FI on the 1800) and rode it down to the daughter's house. Took some "glamor shots" on top of an earthen dam that forms one of our property lines. After the photo op, put about 20 miles on her. Still running pretty rough but the weather is improving so it will give me something to tune on. I'm suspecting the old Presolite ignition, but '77 carbs on a '78 doesn't help.

Total of about 38 miles on her so far. Was trying to get the Prestolite ignition working better, and it did start firing smoothly when I moved the pickup further way a little from the rotor. Then it died. Gave up fooling with it and put the Dyna that I took off of the '79 (Freedom) on it and now it is pretty smooth. Guessed real well on setting the time on it - spot on by timing light. Might switch the old points system from the Hunley to the '78 and put the Dyna on the Hunley (the '78 show bike with '75 motor). Should be even a better day to ride tomorrow and Friday.

Swapped ignitions around. The Hunley now has the Dyna S and Dyna resistor. Fired right up and sounds great! I plan to get a ride in on both Hunley and Johnny 5 tomorrow. The standard points on Johnny 5 sound good, too. I think the Prestolite may be flaky.

Did my part for Homeland Security again. Twice, actually. One trip over Norris Dam on Johnny 5, which really seems to like the standard points ignition, and another trip on the Hunley. Each trip was about a 45 mile loop.

Took the bike for a nice ~100 mile ride a few days ago. Mileage determined by putting the route into Mapsource and seeing the calculated distance. Why? The odometer and trip meters have stopped working. Opened the speedo case (not fun, but I've had to do it on several bikes) and discovered the first driving worm gear is completely worn out. Tried to tighten its driven gear to itm but it is just too far gone. I'll watch ebay for a cheap replacement, but I have an early ('75 -'77,) speedo that came as a spare with the Hunley. Some things are a little different, and it doesn't have the turn signal speed sensor but I'll try today mount it up. Face doesn't really match the other (or the tach) because it is just white on black. Trip reset knob is in the back, but I have the chrome housing for it all, so that is covered. Since the original was so badm there is no telling how many miles are on it. It indicates over 78k, but that may be grossly under actual. The spare that I have shows only ~11k, but the odometer seems to be good on it.

Well, the early speedo fit with a few minor mods. All mounted up. Doesn't look drastically different (but noticeable). Too wet today to try it out.
