Re: The NEXT Project. GL1000LTD
I've always painted them together... at least the engine halves. I have painted front covers, and rear covers separate. Both ways work, and look good.

Re: The NEXT Project. GL1000LTD
The problem with option (a) is that everything will get painted, bolts and all, which in my view would be a pity as all bolts are chrome plated.
I could assemble it with generic sacrificial bolts and then change them one by one when the paint is dry.
Problem with (b) is that there is more disassembly, and then a ton of masking to be done to keep the paint away from where it should not be.
Do any of you have any views on this?

If you like the chrome bolts, paint it before you put it together. Only have to mask it once.... but will have to look at it for years

You can also remove one bolt at a time and clean the head of it after painting. Dip it in paint thinner, clean, replace...

Looking into this a bit more, I could use these plastic bolt caps. They are not expensive.
Paint and later remove them.

They might leave a small ring unpainted around the base.

Re: The NEXT Project. GL1000LTD
I actually found a few of these plastic caps in a box, they are 10mm across flats for a 6mm bolt.
Its actually a nice fit, and the outside diameter is the same as the bolt flange diameter.

Re: The NEXT Project. GL1000LTD
The bolts are 3 sizes, 6mm with 10mm across flats, 8mm with 12mm across flats and 10mm with 14mm across flats.
The 8 and 10 may be a problem, standard head on an 8mm bolt is 13mm across flats and a 10mm bolt is 17mm across flats.
Automotive bolt head sizes are different from standard industrial bolts.

Re: The NEXT Project. GL1000LTD
I was also thinking like Mr. Cyborg about there being a ring left unpainted at the base of the bolt, but looking at it now, I think this might actually work.

I wasn't thinking about a lip on the bolt. I think you are right. It should work fine

Very nice gun!
I think the problem with painting separate parts is the OOPS! you get when trying to put them together, sooner or later you slip with the wrench and scratch, personally I would assemble and mask the bolts carefully
