Re: '77 Wing "Forever Bike"
Turns out the lower triple was tweaked a bit somehow, so I tested the 76's lower triple and it slides on like normal.
Just gotta install the lower tapered bearing parts and paint (not in that order) and move on!

Learned an important lesson: there's a diff between the 76 and 77 bearings, due to head tube size. I ordered a new lower bearing that I'll press onto the 76 head and it should fit right up into the 77 headtube. NBD!

Re: '77 Wing "Forever Bike"
Getting things back together even more. Spent time cleaning up electrical connectors, getting front end sorted out more. Need to mount tires and tubes then take them to get balanced (or maybe I'll buy some weights and do it).
Installed some Cognito moto fork tube nuts and one of their tappet covers for the final drive fill hole. FYI, any CB750 tappet cover wi fit this, so if you want a small bit of customization, there's a chance!
More electrical, brake mounting (need to fab up rear master cylinder mount and get a new line), electric fuel pump mount and more cable routing and the like.
Slowly getting there!!!

The lower head tube is larger on the 77, requiring a different bearing and grease retainer. The steering stem is the same.Paola Zago wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 5:22 amhello wannabridin, I am, like most women, ignorant of mechanics, but I am curious to learn. can you explain me the difference you found between 76 and 77?wannabridin wrote: ↑Sat Oct 24, 2020 11:40 am Learned an important lesson: there's a diff between the 76 and 77 bearings, due to head tube size. In other news, got the front tire and tube mounted, just need to balance it. As I was filling up the rear tire, I kept getting hissing, so upon removal of the tube, I found 2 small pinholes, so i'll have to get a new one.
Someday, I'm going to have to transition to tubeless, I forgot how much I don't like tubes.

You do no justice to your gender.
Are not sewing machines mechanical devices and have motors, hooks, spindles, bobbins etcetera? Also, they are very precise mechanical machines to boot. Not many men know how to set the tension properly on a sewing machine's thread path or time the shuttle and the hook, or wind a bobbin. I believe that all is needed is a little knowledge and hands on experience for either gender.
I bet I'm right and you can do all these things if you put your mind and body to it.
Best regards.

Installed the cheap fogs. I think they'll do a lot for added visibility. Hopefully they don't overpower the turn signals!! Thankfully, those will get upgraded too

Re: '77 Wing "Forever Bike"
Each of the years of the GL1000's had different cam timing and carbs. The effect is that the 75 are the fastest and most aggressive while the 78/9 are the least and the most "touring". Part of this was in response to changing emissions standards, and the other was the realization Americans (the biggest share of the market) were using the gold wing as a cross country touring bikePaola Zago wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 5:22 amhello wannabridin, I am, like most women, ignorant of mechanics, but I am curious to learn. can you explain me the difference you found between 76 and 77?wannabridin wrote: ↑Sat Oct 24, 2020 11:40 am Learned an important lesson: there's a diff between the 76 and 77 bearings, due to head tube size. I have some '75 cams sitting around in case I ever want to swap or rebuild the heads. But I'll likely go with some 57-390's from webcam and get some dyno time at that point...

Re: '77 Wing "Forever Bike"
Ordered some balance beads for the wheels. Local shops are all being unrealistic for a "balance only" job w/ the wheels...
I temporarily installed some Oznium 3W LED bolts to act as aux brake lights and all I can say is WOW. I've used some of their 1W's for marker lights on my truck, but these bolts are CRAZY bright: https://www.oznium.com/led-bolts-prewired-leds/led-bolt. I'll be using them to mount the custom brake "plate" to the factory fender light mount. Still haven't figured out what I'll do for rear turn signals though...

Re: '77 Wing "Forever Bike"
Lots of small updates, but sadly no recent pics. I bought a new socket to cut up and make a castle nut wrench, so I need to get to grinding for that and temporarily finish the triple tree tightening procedure. I'm going to worry about installing the hoop fork brace later on.
I noticed some oil under the clutch cover and found that it was leaking. Upon removing it, i tore it, so I'll be using some threebond 1184 to seal it back up. It's not fun removing that cover, but at least it's "easier" the 2nd time around.
Next up will be lots of small things (have to get the new horn mounted and sorted), fuel pump mount, rear master cylinder mount, new brake lines, install grips, finish connecting carbs and airbox, new drain lines, electrical things (new R/R connections, hard wire stator, new charging cables and grounds, relays, go thru the rest of the electrical connector blocks, etc) and a variety of other things...
Also, fun fact if anyone needs to know - standard "cool white" led's will light up the idiot lights JUST fine. I tried both cool white and color matched ones, and the whites are just fine. Might save you from having to buy 4 different colors. While doing all of these, I drilled a hole in the headlight warning light (I removed the headlight reserve unit system) to mount a voltage light (https://www.ebay.com/itm/LED-MOTORCYCLE ... 2749.l2648) in its place. Upon testing this process on my cracked cluster, I found a satin black aluminum decal surrounding the lights and while researching where this came from, I found this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-Goldwing ... 3845878252. I'll be grabbing one of those to really make things look nice.
Also, I need to sell my brake lines. I've a full stainless setup for the front (3 piece lines) and a new rear stainless line. Front setup will come with the splitter block, ready to install and bleed. I'm going with a simpler 2 piece line up front and will be converting to a modern rear master cylinder out back, so I'll need a different line for that as well. Will post pics and a sale thread later on. LMK if you're interested in the meantime.
Hope to get pics up soon.

Re: '77 Wing "Forever Bike"
Little more work done. Just starting on electrics. Need to make an adapter for the rear master cylinder next. Spent most of the day working on the wife's ride and helping her w/ Xmas, so a bit slow even on the days off.
Fun find: wanted some reflectors for the side of the headlight. I remembered "uxcell" made some but with leds underneath. Well I found some "yellow" ones the other day: they're 3 wire and surprisingly bright. I'm going to drill a small hole in the headlight ear to tuck the wires through to make it nice and clean. Will likely splice them into the turn signal circuit
