Alright, I genuinely hope I am done with this tank. I managed to finish up the sides today (along with some Valkyrie mod parts), and... you know, I'm kinda happy with it.

Now, it's not perfect- there's some crud and bits here and there (symptoms of painting outside, I think), and the sheen isn't completely even across the entire tank. That said, these are less equipment failures and more failures of technique, which is something I can improve upon. And all the important parts look good, which is all that really matters. I got it down to a 1-foot/6 inch paint job, which I can live with.

I'm going to give it a couple days to a week to really cure, then I might try buffing out some of the rougher spots, just for fun. Then I can get this thing back in the bike (FINALLY).

Tank is back in, and I'm happy to say I'm done with it. It didn't go in too badly- have to touch up a couple areas that got chipped on the way in, but nothing too bad, and nothing visible.

The biggest PITA is that at some point I lost the screws for the petcock- the ones I have in are just placeholders, as they're too long. I'll figure it out.

Still not 100% happy with the final finish, but at this point I don't think I ever will be.

When I did my gl1000 I painted the tank with Tremclad gloss black using a nice quality brush. You would have to be extremely anal to notice and the paint flowed well and laid very smooth. The very small portion that is visible looks GR8. I made sure to have that part as showroom quality. I am sure that your tank will stand inspection and a couple of days from now only you will notice any imperfection. Nice job on the tank Lucien.

Thanks all. I realize I shouldn't be this persnickety about something you can't see 90% of, but eventually I would like to learn how to paint correctly. It would open up what things I could do myself quite a bit, especially things I couldn't afford otherwise. Just need more practice.

On the plus side, I found my petcock screws, so that's sorted. I may need to clean up some of the paint edges around the petcock, though- the lip between the paint and bare metal is pretty substantial, and those petcock o-rings aren't that thick....

Like everyone said it is good enough for something that is mostly hidden. As a reasonable painter who is self taught, my thoughts are your getting incorrect materials that are not compatible with each other. I have been shooting paint outside for the past month in 50 F temps with no issues. As long as the humidity is 50-60% the paint flows out well and is a little longer curing.

For the amount of time and work you spend on the prep and prep is the key to a nice finish, use a body shop supplier for your painting supplies.

I have switched away from DupliColour paint now and only use their speciality VHT high heat paint. The cost of their paint has doubled in Canada over the past two years. I can a buy better quality primer in a larger can for the same money from my body shop supplier. I can get custom mixed colours in a can with a much better spray nozzle than DupliColor uses for the same money at $25, which is where a DupliColor can is now up here.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

Thanks for these tips. I have some paint work to do on the extra set of covers/faux tank that I have for my 1000. Going to go to an auto paint supplier and have custom paint mixed and put in spray cans. Hadn't thought about a better nozzle being part of the bargain.

Yeah, I'm still futzing with my gun setup. While I finally caved and spent the money for some proper automotive paint/hardner/reducer, I don't think I got the gun set up correctly. For whatever reason I seemed to be laying way too much paint down at a time, and it wasn't atomizing nearly enough- I'm thinking that's why my finish ended up a bit wavey like it did.

Oh well. I've got time to play with it now. Next up is either the exhaust or the rear brake, only because I can't remember what one has to go on first. I was going to rebuild the caliper and MC, but rebuild kits hit me with a bit of sticker shock, and neither end of the brake actually leaks at all. I think I'll stick with cleaning them up, repainting the caliper, and running some fresh fluid through it. Then I can actually get this pig started and see if anything starts leaking out of anything else.

To heck with it- exhaust first, rear brake later. Let's go.

Honestly, the hardest part was un-bending all the the stuff at the muffler/header connection to get it to fit together before cranking the clamps down. Once you run them in everything tends to kind of settle. It's still all bent to heck, but at least bolt holes and whatnot line up. Still, it wasn't a huge deal.

I even managed to get it started for a bit. It runs surprisingly well for me not having touched anything except the timing. I still have to set the sync of course, but I can fiddle with all that later. On the upside, between all the paint, ceramic coat, and new gaskets, when running this things absolutely STINKS.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_QNu5Dx6nc

Really the final tally of stuff to do is:

-Paint and replace fluid in rear caliper (then rebuild back end).
-Rebuild front caliper(s), possible MC.
-Polish up front fork lowers.

aaaaaaand that's kinda it.

Time to put some miles on it ... And consider there's one less project in the barn.
