75 GL1000 Project

#1

Post by MikeNTexas »

So I have been scouring the local ads for a new project to get me out of the recliner and back out in the shop and ran across a '75 Goldwing. This is my first Goldwing so its a new experience for me. I have restored many cars and a few bikes, the latest being a V65 Magna.
So anyway the PO had rebuilt the carbs, and installed a new clutch, water pump and timing belts. My plan is to do a close to stock restore with a few mods.
I have the bike disassembled down to the bare frame now and I'm making a list of parts needed. Thanks to Fitscott I have a side covers, a caliper and an oil pressure switch on the way. I'll be putting a wish list on the parts wanted section soon for other items needed. Some of which being a left side headlight bracket, speedo cable, handle bars, Mirrors, battery strap, and the left side switch housing (mine is broke where the mirror mounts)
Here are a few pics of the progress so far.

Welcome Mike. Looks like you have a good starting point to work with. I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t believe black was a color offered in 75. I don’t know if your goal is a full off factory restoration, but if it is, I don’t believe the black will be correct.

However, to my eye black and chrome or polished aluminum is a really nice combination on a motorcycle – especially a four-cylinder Goldwing.

And the shop is definitely preferable to an armchair. Even if you’re just sitting out there and listening to tunes.

With the improvements the PO made , those wheels , spin on oil filter, etc. - looks like a great start!

Scott, I didn’t realize the wheels weren’t factory. I’ll probably be going with a mild custom theme. That will save me from trying to find missing unobtainium parts.

All indications are that this bike was originally black. If not a PO went to great lengths to remove all of the factory finish before repainting.

They probably just swapped 77 body parts on to it. The 75 only came in red or blue/green.

I'm fairly certain those are Henry Abe wheels. If you re-painted them floss black and polished the rest, it would be a striking color to go with the black!!!

If you could align a rotor drill pattern, you could have a fantastic detail there too.

Yeah, blue valve cover logos plus POSSIBLY use of rods for throttle linkages point to a '75. Checking the headstock plate is a dead giveaway too...

Wheels are aftermarket for sure, and even though black was a '77 option, the pinstripes don't match up, so it may well be a custom paint job. Either way, looks like a great place to start from!

I have several spoke wheels if you want to go that route but I really like the wheels you have. - wannabridin gave me a great deal on some Lesters for my 75.

I think those Herny's are even more rare than the Lesters!

If you're going restomod, you need spokes. You could likely sell the set you have now for a decent sum to cover wires.

I'll wanted a restomod 77, and spokes are required for 70's Hondas (in my opinion). My spokes will be getting rebuilt someday w/ new spokes and hoops :-D

I may go with the an all black theme. Here’s a pic of the V-65 I rebuilt a while back.

I am pretty partial to the V4s as well. Unfortunately for the Honda team, the ones that hooked me were the Yamaha. Currently own two. Here are a few:

And Mike, unless you really have your heart set on a factory restoration, I agree with you. Black motorcycles can look spectacular. And as wannaberidin states those Henry Abe wheels are to die for. You have the makings of a very nice custom.
