Re: 75 GL1000 Project
I had to see what it looked like as an almost complete motorcycle so I loosely installed all the body parts in primer. Then I started it up for the first time on a couple of months only to find out I have a massive fuel leak coming from the seal between the plenum halves! Pulled the carbs out and split the plenum to find a cheapie gasket that the PO installed. Ordered a viton gasket from Randakk to replace it.

Re: 75 GL1000 Project
I would go through the carbs while you have them off. If you had a leak like that, expect other issues with the carbs.

Carbs were gone through by PO and bike ran fine just leaked fuel.cfairweather wrote: ↑Tue Mar 02, 2021 9:38 am I would go through the carbs while you have them off. If you had a leak like that, expect other issues with the carbs.

You should check the pilot jets in the brass elbows to see if the off idle mod has been done.

Re: 75 GL1000 Project
Put the carbs back on today. No leaks! Idles a little rough so I’ll work on syncing the carbs in the next day or to. Topped off the cooling system and let it run a while. Temp gauge works and the fan comes on. Life is good!

Love the Skylark! Dad had a '65 Impala the same color.

Awesome work! I was just wondering what I was going to do for the pulleys on my build. Saw your post... Bazinga! That's what I'll do! Thanks for posting up the pulley part no too.. Big help. Just picked up 2 pulleys from Amazon Australia for less than $30...winner!MikeNTexas wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 2:19 pm I received the Gates idler pulleys yesterday to I warmed up the shop and went to work on them.
To remove the old idlers I drilled part way through the shaft on the rear with a 17/32nd drill bit. This allowed me to punch the shaft out leaving the original hole undamaged.
I found some 10mm bolts with a large hex head along with some flange nuts in my metric bone pile. I then found a couple of copper washers to use as a spacer to center a 10mm bolt in the hole. with the large hex head bolt there is plenty of contact area to keep it straight in the hole.
I have seen where others have left off the heat shield and shim that goes behind the bracket but I decided to reuse them. It was necessary to cut a notch in the shim and a hole in the heat shield for bolt head clearance.
Hey, what's white stuff between the layers of the heatshield? Not asbestos I hope!!
Installed the idlers and adjusted the belt tension then checked the cam timing to make sure nothing rotated while the belts were loose.

Re: 75 GL1000 Project
Nice Project Mike. I use the hex 10mm bolts but I grind an angle on the edge of the mating surface so the bolt head sinks down into the hole a bit. Then I install the wheel and tighten the bolt. Then I grind off the end of the bolt so the back side is completely flat, just like the original. Then you don't have to drill a hole in the backing plate.

Re: 75 GL1000 Project
At this point I need luck and had a bit of it recently. Same issue with a motor sitting for years. Corrosion in cyl. When I've split the engine I've found the pistons at 0.25 over. And given a bit of a clean don't show a lot of wear. Crank had fair bit of scouring so needed to find. I had a second 1000 engine spare which I now think is the original engine, I checked bores.. Good, heads look good, and after splitting cases and checking bearings. They're good also. The bores are standard so the 0.25 pistons are gonna be going into the second engine...
My 81 1100 is on hold for the same reason... Corrosion... Very minor but workable. Standard bore still. I only wanted to go 0.25 over on them but seems 0.50 are only ones I can find so that may be the case.
My 83 Aspencade motor sitting with heads off, I've cleaned them up, ported and polished them, so they can go back on. However I don't know the condition of the engine as the heads were off and in pieces when I got it. Stripped frames on all the bikes and repainted as well... Lots going on.. Keeps me sane... And broke haha.

Re: 75 GL1000 Project
I installed my freshly painted parts today and I must say I’m happy with the results.
