new project: 1975 Gl1000

Howdy,
So I dropped off the heads and split engine of my Gl1100 at the machine shop for measuring and the owner asks if I would be interested in another Goldwing he kept in a back room. A week later she followed me home on a trailer.

The good things: 26,000 miles, all parts are there and in good condition, very little to no rust, good original exhaust, engine turns over with starter, lights work, nice front fairing ( not sure if this is a windjammer?). Came with an extra rebuilt 1981 carb.

The bad things: (or lets say a little harder to fix): he said his Dad ran it last a decade ago before he became ill and couldn't ride anymore ( however, the tag says '85).
Some fuel was left in the tank and is has completely congealed inside and fused with the liner. Looks like it has to go to a shop.
The carburetor has the same problem. All brakes need to be rebuild, forks are leaking.
Some weird handle bar risers installed.
I gave the carbs a bath for 12 hours in simple green and greased lightning in an ultrasonic bath and sprayed PB Blaster.
Just now I was able to remove the fuel bowls and cv slides. I can't remove the butterflies holding the jets. It's all melted together. There is black goo everywhere. I have Randakk's carb kit and video and I was surprised how different the carbs are from the 1100.
There are no kidney shaped plates or maybe they are stuck and it looks like there are two jets missing (circled)?
It's going to go into a pine sol filled slow cooker or an Acetone bath !?
I have some reference. A Clymer and a Honda factory service manual I ordered from ebay with 5 missing chapters.

Looking for a complete Honda manual if someone has it.

Time for that tank to come out for a good clean/perhaps coating. Removal includes removing rear master, shocks, battery box, seat, rear bolts to the shelter so you can lift it to clear the fill spout. Pull level sender and petcock. I would have started with a gallon or two of acetone to cut the varnish build-up. Derusting can be done many different ways. The '75 engine is the hottest Honda built - detuned every year since. I would find a '75 rack and use it over 1100 carbs.

Its already out and had a vinegar fill for a week. It did nothing.
How do you dispose of used acetone?
It came with the original carburetor but like I said, it's gunked up and taking a pine sol bath now.

Any idea what kind of handle bar risers to get?

I tried the apple cider vinegar thing..same result as you. It did nothing. I tried electrolysis and that worked.
do you need the risers?

Electrolysis worked on my gl1100 tank but it didn't have a liner.
This one does, or had, it is separating from the inside of the tank and crumbled into a mess.
I was wondering what the correct risers are, these in the photo don't look right.
What do you have?

Just my 2 cents - unless the risers are needed for fairing clearance reasons I would remove them. Another option would be to remove that butt-ugly fairing.

Good luck with your new project. Looks like you have a really good foundation to start with.

If the liner has a white/cream base (before rust) appearance, it is Kreem and not worth a dime. Luckily it dissolves in Acetone. Once it has dissolved it (takes about a week of rolling two gallons around in it), pour it back into the acetone cans and let it settle for a few months, then decant and you can use the acetone for other purposes even though it won't be pure. Ten mix it in with used motor oil and take it to recycling. The tank can then be de-rusted normally.

I keep hearing about how "crappy" Kreem is. I have it in my 78 tank. I installed it the "correct way" over 20 years ago, and it is still fine. I would have to think that the only " problem " with the product, is the people installing it. And don't try and put it on the "ethanol" fuel. I use it straight from the pump, and have with most all of the 500K miles on the bike.

Those carbs will clean up. I've dealt with far worse than those. Acetone will get through that treacle. You are NOT missing jets.

this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

And you show a picture of the kidney shaped plates. the screws are already removed. They can be stubborn to remove sometimes.

I am not sure if I should invest in $60 worth of Acetone or pay the local radiator shop $200 to clean & coat. He uses red kote.

Yes the kidney shaped plates came off with the help of a dental pick.
The primary & secondary jets underneath did not want to move so they are bathing in PB until I buy the correct size screw driver before I bugger them up.

After an hour of bathing in hot pine sol I was finally able to push the float pins back and forth until they came out without breaking the towers. The primary and secondary nozzles came out as well as the needles and seats but the filter screens are smooshed and molten and the needles don't have a black tip anymore.

The slow jets and fuel/air mix screws came out, they don't have a washer like on the 1100 ?

24 hours in Acetone dissolved the congealed fuel left over in the fuel bowls, the drain screws still don't turn. I think I will have to use a propane torch.

Meanwhile the intake runners are stripped and waiting for some polishing.

I see that you left the chrome garnish on attaching the pairs - good! Saves a huge headache rejoining them. Two gallons of acetone is advertised at Home Depot for $32.32 - one might do it. And there lies still another fault of this liner. Acetone is in a lot of "fuel conditioners/carb cleaners".

I watched the Randakk DVD before touching anything and found the chrome brackets in the tool tray of the bike. Much easier to work with than the 1100 carbs and the pairs fit right into the 10l ultrasonic.
I tried to push some air through the fuel lines of the tank and it looks like they are plugged up.
Have you tried inserting a long wire similar to a plumbing snake into it?

I used an old tach cable chucked into a cordless drill...
