Uh-oh!
Looks like I installed the right rear cam shaft seal without taking the fuel pump's lip into consideration.
So it's flush with the head and the fuel pump can't get in. I used Yamabond so the seal is not moving.
I guess I would have to turn the motor to where I have the least amount of pressure on the right side lobes and uninstall the cam holder to get to it. Correct?
Also, the spark plug that came out are DR8EA. They look OK but are 40 years old.
OK to replace with DPR8EIx-9 (out of my 81 Gl1100)?

The RH rear of the cam does not get a seal. Only the front of the RH cam and both ends of the LH cam.

All good now.
A little acetone dissolved the yamabond and it came out fine.
About the spark plugs, the NGK/R DR8EA are listed at $ 5.99 each at amazon
Should I look for Iridium plugs instead?

Yay! She runs.
I kept the idle at a little over 1000 (some chatter coming from the engine under 1000 rpm) but she revs quickly. I haven't synchronized the carbs yet and left the points alone.
All gauges work and I ran one heat cycle to burb the radiator and see if the fan comes on.
The temp gauge went all the way to the right without the fan coming on.
I tested the thermal switch with a meter before I installed it and made sure all contacts on the connections are clean.
Any other ideas to test it?
Now she is almost ready for a ride except for the front brakes. Calipers are rebuilt but the master cylinder is shot and I would like to get an aftermarket one quickly while I take time to rebuilt the original one.
Can you recommend an aftermarket MC?

I have one of the cheap MCs from china (but sold by a US company) on my 78. There are lots of links on Ebay. One caution is that I originally bought a 14mm bore (advertised to fit a Gl1000 but found was insufficient to operate two front calipers adequately. I then opted for one with a 16mm bore and it works well. I do have new stainless brake lines. The MC was cheap and seems to work well so far.

Hard to tell but likely the same as that one.There are so many listings that I can't recall but the price was close to that and it was a 16mm MC. Like I say works fine so far and to be honest I prefer the shape and low profile of this one compared to the oem style. Just my opinion tho.

FWIW, I just got this one for my '78 - $23 shipped on Ebay, and it fits well and seems to be pretty robust.

The black reservoir and silver lever fits well with the bike, I think. Shipped from Texas, and got here pretty quick. I was going to get an OEM rebuild kit ,but the original MC was pretty 'weathered'; plus the rebuild kit was, like, $15 more, so why not go new, y'know...?

I've got the original front MC rebuilt. The hardest part was getting the c-clip out and cleaning inside.
All good now.
But, the fan just won't come on with the temp gauge all the way to hot!

All good. I get continuity at 190f in hot coolant.
Then I shorted the thermo switch connection and turned on the ignition and the fan comes on.
So what is going on here?
Is the temp gauge giving a too cold reading?
I'm afraid to overheat it waiting for the fan.
