1976 GL1000 Project #3

Finishing up my first two Goldwings, a 1975 and a naked 1983 and I ran across another deal I couldn’t pass up. Picked up this 76 for 100 bucks today. Clean title, not locked up. Looks like it going to need just about everything. Hasn’t been registered in 10 years but the guy said he has ridden it around on the back roads around his farm until the brakes failed a couple of years ago. I’m going to see if I can fire it up in the next few days. Wish me luck.

I don't have a trailer, but now I have a reason to get one before Vintage days. What are they?

Basically have not touched them. One is a 75 with title the other is a 77 without but comes with a titled frame. Pretty sure I have all the pieces parts that come with them. They might be a bit more work than you are looking for. Maybe I will try to get the 75 running and bring it with my 75 to sell up there.

might be right. I already have a project on my lift that is pretty demanding. (77 frame, 1200 engine and front end, 1200 seat, Harley full size exhaust, Harley leather saddle bags,.....well you get the idea. Qh, and air suspension that allows the bike to sit on the ground when not driven. And , ofcourse, single shock swing are. Hope to finish it this winter.

I pulled the plugs and rolled it over using the back wheel in fifth gear to make sure there were no valves stuck open causing interference.

I then put a battery on it and turned it some. Put the compression gauge to it and got 140 PSI on all 4 cylinders! WOO HOO!!

I attached a remote tank to it and gravity fed the carbs and was able to start it but only running on one cylinder. Only one exhaust pipe got hot.

I pulley the rack turned it upside down, removed the bowls and the jets. Most of which were plugged up. Cleaned them, sprayed carb cleaner through the fuel passages and hit them with a blow gun. Set the floats, three of them were way high.

Put the carbs back on and it hits on all four now!

It’s a $100 Runner. Couldn’t be happier.

I want to make sure this bike is worth spending money on so I spent today working on the carbs.

After having the rack off and on three times each time finding a different problem I finally got it.

Got a decent idle and hooked up the sync gauges. Man it was way off. So far off that the exhaust on 2 and 4 were barely warming up and had way more vacuum than 1 and 3.

After playing with them a while it’s all balanced out and running good. Tomorrow the disassembly will began.

Nice find.

I'd call that paint patinated, perhaps a key feature of a machine with character.

I'll watch with interest, as I do with your other project.

FWIW: I'm filing your little "quick carb clean" description away for my own new project. (I'll start up that topic soon enough.)

Lookin’ good, Mike. What are you using to seal the engine (heads, etc,) before painting?

The plastic plugs I sealed the intake and exhaust ports with came installed in the exhaust ports of a Chevrolet 350 crate motor I bought a while back.
