Started a new project. 1976 basket case

I acquired a butt load of parts from member fitscott a few weeks ago. In the mix was a 76 frame and complete engine with unknown miles and a clean title. Also included was a new single carb manifold. I bolted the engine to my stand, pulled the plugs, squirted some penetrating oil in the cylinders and let it sit for a day. Came back and followed up with a few squirts of tranny fluid in each cylinder. Spun it with the starter and was rewarded with 120 psi compression in each cylinder so I ordered a new Chinese 34 pict 3 carb on eBay. While waiting on it I rigged the engine up with everything to crank it on the stand. Got the carb in and installed and it’s a runner! Got back online and ordered timing belts, idlers, water pump and some gaskets. This will be my fourth project to start since last December. It won’t go as fast as the first three since I’m not starting with a complete bike so I’ll take more time with this one. I’ll attempt to add a video of it running as soon as I figure out how to do that.

The parts I ordered from Saber Friday arrived today. Now that’s service. I cleaned and painted the engine today and installed the water pump. I’ll probably start getting the frame ready to paint tomorrow.

Can I ask what type and color of paint you used? That looks great!

Also, how did you mount the engine to the stand? I am working on a '76 basket case myself, and being able to start and test the motor before mounting it in the frame sounds like a great idea.

I used Duplicolor silver engine paint #1615. I made some brackets out of angle iron to fasten the engine to the stand. The radiator is only supported by the hoses.

I got the frame painted, new u joint installed, new fork seals in, and engine is back in the frame. I have 4 gas tanks so I’ll pick the one with the least rust and go to work on it.

I replaced the u joint with a Moog 405. It’s the third one I’ve done. Little tricky but doable.
