Texas Cafe Build Begins Now

#1

Post by robjordan406 »

The Texas build begins now.......1979 G1000 Cafe build starts today. The bike is now total naked, as you can see. Stripped off the radiator, fan shroud, gas tank and seat. Will require rewiring of the main wires around the battery. My plans for the bike include:
1) 1980 large peanut gas tank painted black/white custom built with 1979 gauges molded into tank.
2) Ducanti Monster cafe seat (perfect fitment)
3) Partial blackened engine with chrome valve covers and carb tops
4) Straight Z bars
5) Custom mini chrome front fender
6) Various other mods and changes as they arise.
7) Naturally get the engine running smooth
This project hopefully will be fun and challenging in the future.

Proceeding nicely on the build to put a 1980 large peanut tank (GL1100) on a 1979 GL1000. I had to modify that GL1000 faux tank frame by cutting the top edges with a sawzall. It would have been a lot easier if I didnt install the original tank frame but so many things attach to it, it made it smoother for me. I left a small edge on the frame to attach the rubber edges. I still have to figure out how to attach the 1979 raised gauges on this Gl1100 (1980) tank but it work out. Also will have to cut the Ducati Monster seat edges (see blue tape) to match the new tank and grind off some plastic off the bottom of the seat to make it fit nicer. I will drill a hole in the fender for the seat stud to fit in. I will post the final picture of the tank and the seat when I am done.

I need to update with pictures... getting close to being thru. Chopped off the front fender. Installed custom Z bars and new controls (l/r)... got the 80 peanut tank painted partially. Sorted out most of the electrical issues. I am going to name it BLACKJACK with a Jack/Ace card inlaid with Gold lettering BLACKJACK with gold pinstriping on tank. Lowered the back shocks by 3" and dropped the front 2" for a meaner stance and so I can easily touch ground.

Picture of the bike today.... I am still waiting on a plastic cafe fairing and a rear plastic cone for the back of seat.. but this gives you an idea of my envision.
