Recently received an 82 naked GL1100 as a gift from my Uncle in Jacksonville. His baby. His Pride and joy. He was the original and only owner. He was a MSF instructor in his younger years, and thoroughly enjoyed the bike over the past decades. He kept it in exceptional original condition. Only adding a plexiglass fairing to it later in life. Now in his later 70's he's stopped riding and the bike has sat for over a year in his garage. Covered and with fuel still in it. I had been asking him to sell it to me, and what would be a price he'd be comfortable selling it for. To my great surprise, I was told, "if you come visit, you can take it home with you". So a quick run to Jacksonville from Cincinnati was done.

When I actually stood next to the bike, I was surprised at the sheer size of it. Much larger then it looked in pictures, we loaded it up on the U-Haul trailer and strapped her in for the long ride home. He said he couldn't get it started for the past 12 months or so, and that the throttle was frozen. He was right. It turns over via the starter, but no fuel appears to be going in the cylinders.

Well, got her in the barn, and immediately started examining the bike. A quick review showed a fuel tank that had gotten a good amount of condensation, and some severe rust content. Logic stated the fuel system is buggered, and would require a good cleaning, and possibly a carb rebuild. So off I went. Pulled the gas tank and all things obstructing it.

So begins the project.

Ultimately, Ill be not only fixing the fuel system issue, but swapping the fenders, rear lights, repairing a leaking rear shock, installing an LED Headlamp, lower bars, and a breadloaf style seat. And fast ( hopefully) Have set a drop dead finish date of 10/28, as it is my B-day, and I want to be riding this beauty by that day.

Wish me luck, and here we go.

Looks like a keeper to me! Just my humble opinion, but I always go through the brakes, check the date codes on the tires, and inspect them closely for any cracks/ weather checking (and yes, they can 'weather check' even inside, covered).
Happy wrenchin'!

Track, the tires are from 2010, so there’s that. Brakes, have been well maintained. Will be doing all standard stuff, filters fluids, etc. but I wanna be riding this before 11/1… so lots to do.

Looks like a beautiful gift. I'm convinced you'll appreciate it more BECAUSE you have to wrench on it before you can ride it. You have an ambitious timeline. Know that I'm rooting for you!
